Here is the thing: If he has a web-site, he has no right to be upset about links being posted.  Everything that he has posted is public (unless you have to pay to get access). You didn't do anything wrong and he seems to have over-reacted. There are much more mature and professional ways to have handled that situation if he had an issue with it. Atleast that's my take on things...

Or maybe it was not him, how sure can you be?  You have to be pretty cold to hear someone compliment you live and continue to threaten.  Could you verify that it was him?

And there is absolutely no infringement in either quoting his work or placing links as long as proper sources were listed…which seems like you did.

Not to debate the merits of your situation but on the point of fame vs. obnoxiousness.

In the mid 80's (I'm dating myself here) I used to work for a Academy Grammy AMA award winning singer.  I was just one of the little people in the machine that works behind any major force.   He, his wife, and the talent associated with his creative work (NOT the accounting people though) were some of the nicest people you could ever meet.

Just because one is bigtime doesn't mean they have to be petty or jerks.

No, they are not all like that.
I worked with Bruce Weber and he was nothing but highly professional and kind. He went totally out of his way every morning to personally speak to everyone, even the cooks and waiters. A truley great guy! Hopefully there are more like him out there.Thats too bad about your experience with one...

You should always contact them prior to posting links to their site.  I have had a bad experience with unauthorized posting of my website.  Someone posted a link to my site on their portal and my link was only a few away from a site advertising child pornography.  It's lawyer time!  Most of the time people post links to my site its nothing but then again I dont think I have ever gotten any work from web links nor is the traffic necesarilly a good thing.  Work usually comes from printed media and often times the web traffic comes from people who are just killing time at their 9 to 5.  The guy shouldnt have been a dick about it, he should have just said that he didnt want the traffic or to be associated with Rupert Murdoch's Myspace and asked you to take it down.  If you would have contacted him beforehand he might have been more amenable.

Folks, that is *not* infinging on his copyright. That's nonsense.

You were not reproducing his work, you were providing a link. This is no more a crime than it is to post the address of your local art gallery.

It funny, I found the guys/gals with the least exprience to be rude (not all of course) and the ones I was nervous to shoot with the nicest.

I think it's just a person's personality. I knwo so many photographers that fight and have an ongoing feud and it's just ridiculous!!! Models get along better!

I've only been at this full time for a few months.  In my previous job as an Internet consultant at an interactive agency, I mostly only dealt with VP and C-level people at "Fortune 2000" type companies.  This is a real culture shock and adjustment for me.   The photographer community is a real querky bunch.  You guys totally crack me up!!!  ;o)

I have met some phenominal photographers some are jerks to me and some are super nice and have even offered to have me assist them.

The three I think I can respect the most as a full time working photogtaphers has a 2000 square foot studio in the middle of SF. and another in santa clara those three off of the top of my head are great...

'Kay, that made me laugh.

I hate MySpace, but even with as little as I pay attention to it, it's been pretty good to me.  I've gotten several private commissions from having a profile there, so I ain't complainin'.  On the other hand, I'm a small fishy so that's still exciting stuff to me.

This would be his only sensible gripe...but, if there was no hotlinking, he was entirely out of line with his response. Reputation of Myspace or not, you're an idiot to presume that you will have sovereign control about who shares your work with who at a point where you become relatively well known.

If you do find that someone's links are overloading your bandwidth, it would be a request to the person asking for them to cut them down or remove them...not a demand.

Oh, I'd be fuming...and he'd be finding an influx of traffic to his site from much less "reputable" online locations had he pulled that shit with me.

Im not a big fan of myspace but I did get to photograph a newly signed band and they bought me a new camera and a nice piece of glass for my time. I liked the trade and would do it again given the chance. Then again it doesnt hurt that I liked the band's music.

(I've got to admit that I've read only the first few replies on this thread.)

There is a very legitimate reason for a photographer not wanting someone to post links deep into his site -- he might have made arrangements on leading folks into those links.

>>>  For example, he might have nude images & have a "gateway" link with a warning that going deeper into the site will expose folks to those nude images & warning them to turn away if such images offends them.

>>>  Another example:  he may have sponsors for his site, and they may expect to be given credit before moving deeper into his site.

>>>  In fact, he may have contractual obligations that are only satisfied with the arrangements & organizations of the site as designed.

So, why get your panties in a bunch?  Respect his wishes & link only to his opening page.  In fact, it is in poor taste to do anything else.
