I change my avatar pretty often. Now I'm thinking this might be a mistake. Is it like a company logo that you need to build up a brand with? What do people with more experience find?

It's not that serious - not to me.

Whenever you feel like changing - change

I change my avatar more often than my Brita filter, less often than my underwear.

I notice some people keep their avatar for a month at a time, and some of them are pretty prominent photographers. Maybe they're just too busy to even give it any thought.
Does anyone become attached to their avatar? I've come over from the game space, where people actually identify themselves with their avatar.

I like this idea, I do feel more like updating when I've had a good shoot.
