If it begs for a name and doesn't seem to want to do anything. Call it quits!

Is that what you really want to know?  More to the point: are you asking "When do you know to call it quits?" or are you really asking "When is the time to call it quits?"

The time to call it quits is when you've done what you wanted, you gave it all you had, you have no regrets, and you could still keep doing what you're doing at the level you do it if you wanted.  You leave on top of your game and walk away without regrets.

According to Murphy's Law the time you actually know to call it quits, on the other hand, is always sometime after you should've actually done it.  So you don't go out on top, you lose your edge, you aren't remember at your peak but in a decline, and you live with the knowledge that you should've already gotten out before things passed you by.

Basically, if you have to ask, it's already past time...

Though truthfully, I usually just call it quits the minute she starts bitching about the toilet seat...
