Driving up to a shooting location with a couple of models and another photographer the other day. We got into a conversation about how to make money at this whole thing called e-modeling/e-photography. When one of the models exclaims:

"I'd never pay a photographer. That's just stupid!"

I didn't say anything, I just kept driving and shook my head. Blood boiled a little.

So this is what it's come to. Photographers. It's time to get out a pad and paper and get creative on how we can capitalize on the prevailing attitudes among the demographics which many of us market our work to.

Time to re-write the business plan.

Only 8 minutes between your anti-unpaid photography threads?  Bad day?

No, not really. Just finally had time to sit down and write up a couple of things that have been on my mind lately. And this topic is what inspired the other one.

There should be a vending machine-style monetary bill slot on cameras that releases the lens cap.  It only takes crisp 50s and 100s, and releases the cap for a dollar per shot.

Well...if she had been in my car......hope she brought walking shoes.......

Just wondering why you would be doing a shoot with a model who has so little respect for what you do???

People like that are nothing other then stupid. The model. Not you.
If you ask the photographer to do something, then you should pay him. I can't get my head around the traipsing around getting everything free concept..the world doesn't work that way. Someone does something for you, you should be prepared to compensate. Ya'll do a lot, from taking the pictures to making us look good in em, that deserves respect.

She says as she posts on a free modeling website, LOL.

Maybe we should sell advertising space on our cameras.

If you're wondering where this attitude of "never paying a photographer" come from, there are a TON of photographers on MM who will boast that they would NEVER charge a model for a shoot, TFP only, because it's a hobby or an art for them, or they just like to see naked girls I would venture to guess.  ;->

and to be fair, there are a lot of photographers on MM who boast that they would "never pay a model".  So it's a 2 way street.

I don't know the answer to this quandry.  I'm just trying to make my business pay for itself.

How about hire yourself out as a DOP (Director of Photography) and then tell GWC's how to take the pictures.  Then HE and the model have to pay you royalties on the images!  smile
