On Mark's beat the heat thread, Sabina had this to say:

Sabina N wrote:
And here I was expecting, and hoping, for anti-"hot" shots... pics that, instead of making the model look "good," look earthly/real/rough/gritty/asexual etc. neutral

In this age of parody threads, I'm too tired and unmotivated to start one at the moment...

So, just for her I invite you all to think about your favorite shots that are compelling or powerful or meaningful, but not necessarily "pretty."

I'll go first.  The description on the image says everything you need to know about it.

Mine isn't as meaningful, but it's definitely gritty instead of "pretty".

Not sure if this counts.. Model is VERY pretty.. But I didn't pull out this particular crop because I found it pretty..  I actually found the look kind of disturbing..

Shyly,
thankyou.
Often fixing things takes less time then the other.
But I am a guy I like when things are fixed.

Spend 90% of your time on the present and the future.
10% of the past but remember the past is past.

As with many of these photos,  some unpretty things will be pretty.
I have a tendency to do that sometimes or
To make happy things look dark.

A look into the commercial aspects of holidays and our culture.

I guess if there's a meaning to this shot, it's "God bless the person who invented pulled pork barbecue sandwiches."

I don't do "pretty" -- I never have...Until recently I even said as much in my profile.  You can choose anything I've done as an example of "unpretty" [whatever that means].

Awesome!

Thanks for taking the initiative, Shyly; I can see why everyone likes you wink

I'm quite digging these shots, and digging up my own to scan and post...

Artistically, I think my favourite type of visual (and other) art is that which demonstrates what it is to be alive, organic, and biodegradable. It reminds us of the  details we can easily forget, because we're rushing to work instead.

At the same time, I appreciate clean images as well... although not pretty. In waxen-face, poreless work, humans can demonstrate their control over nature, and I think that psychologically, that must be part of the appeal.

So why am I mostly interested in a part of the modeling industry that so many consider synonymous to "beauty" - fashion/editorial? Well... I consider it much closer to "striking" than "good-looking," and I have a huge amount of trouble rejecting those standards emotionally, even if I can do so logically sad But no one needs to know that.

So I try to find the best of both, and seek the grittiest possible style I can. Once I have my fix of that sector, though - on to some other ideas I've always wanted to try!

Shyly's shot is amazing; as all the comments say, the ferocity is undeniable. That's the stuff.

I call this shot scorned and to me it is far from pretty, which is my main attraction to this image.

I have to admit I dont think I have done a "pretty" shot yet.
I just dont have the look for it and I am more than happy doing images that appeal for a different reason.

Since this was the first shot I ever did after the alopecia hit and I shaved all my hair off I am going to go for this one!
It was a personal confrontation for me as up until that point NO-ONE had seen my head totally shaved bald(I hadnt even looked at it in the mirror).

I don't *do* unpretty...  Sorry...  Even the subjects that I cover that aren't "pretty" I try to find the pretty/beautiful in them.

I'm really glad I asked this question.  There are some outstanding images on this thread, many of which I hadn't seen before.

Thanks and darn...I need to get some of these great unpretty ones.

All of you guys have some fantatic images, so creative and I find them more inspiring then all the sugar coated stuff that seems to be the majority.

Edit: I screwed up the quote thingy..need coffee bad

Some times I do prety,
Some times I don't
Usually more of the latter.
