I've been receiving spam via my alias email address from people looking through mm. I get stock infomation, people sending me emails about terminal illness (which always leads to giving them money), and fake overseas modeling requests. Who actually goes through a model's profile and says "I think I'll send her this new stock she should buy" or "She's a model, maybe she'll feel extra sorry about my esophogeal cancer". I mean what's really going on?

I mean what's really going on? I have experienced this, too. I use the same address for everything so I had no way to be sure it was because of MM, but you said you have a seperate address for MM, so it must be true. Maybe when we sign up for accounts here, our e-mail addresses are made public or given to someone? I get those stupid long, personal e-mails asking for money. The first time I did was after signing up for an account here. I had my SPAM filter set just perfectly before this and wasn't really getting any SPAM at all.. maybe like twice a week something would slip through.

Well, do you have any guesses as to why people opening accounts here suddenly get SPAM like never before? ..My e-mail address is not displayed in my bio. It was for about a week or so recently, but the SPAM started before then.

It's called looking through portfolios and just grabbing e-mail addresses from your profile. I've been getting them too but it's one of the following: A spammer with wayyy too much time on their hands just randomly grabbing e-mails. A script that just parses through the php generated profile page and grabs your e-mail address from there. IF MM were to be selling their e-mail list, you'd be getting a lot more spam about stuff OTHER than photography/model related issues. You'd be hearing about viagra, this model so and so who has a webcam, stock tips, messages from Nigeria about some rich dude who is gonna die and needs someone to take his money, etc. -PKD

We're getting e-mails like some of the ones you mentioned we'd be getting. Not about photography/model related issues.

Anywhere that your email is displayed on a website it can be picked up by programs called 'spiders'. They crawl websites and gather email addresses to be added to spam lists. It's much more efficient that a human actually looking through hundreds of profiles for email addresses. You can avoid it by telling people to PM you for your email, or by typing your email address like this: yourname-at-yourdomain.net, or by placing spaces in it like yourname @ yourdomain.net. Most people can figure out that those aren't your exact address, but you may want to make a note of it for the slower folks.

Remember when the site got hacked ages ago? I'm pretty sure the dude grabbed email addresses from the site. Part of the reason I changed my throw-away account to a new one. Haven't had any problems with it yet.

So, I would like to restate: My e-mail address is not displayed on my profile. After signing up with MM, I started getting e-mails like this one:

I use challenge/response, and don't get spam in my inbox, period. And I post my email address all over the place. It's harvested like mad. My unfirmed queue gets at least 2000 spams per day. Two thousand. None of them reach me. Oh, the humanity.

There should be a "do not spam" thing like we have for phones.

It is not from MM your getting all this "spam". On your front page you have a yahoo group and two web sites. I uninstall all kinds of toolbars from computers when i work on them and the common ones are yahoo, google, aol, ask.jeeves, ask ect. ect. they all let unwanted stuff onto your computer. Your problem most likely is the yahoo group since posting it on the site here gives people access to that. You also might have your MM info on your yahoo page as well and that is where they get all the info they need to send the spam to you. The yahoo accounts are well known places to get emails, names ect for spamming. Remove the yahoo group from here and remove the mm info from the yahoo account and it will go away eventualy.

I don't get enough spam to really worry about it. I always put numbers and underscores in my email addresses, it is harder for an address generator to create your address at random that way. Always a good idea to start a new free acount on Yahoo or where ever and use it to get hooked up with sites like this. Even if it got totally trashed, just change it and ditch it! Keep one address that is "Pure" for communications.
