I have heard from several places/people something that is just too hard to believe, so I figured to come here and ask if it was, and since I trust more of the people here then elsewhere, this is the place to go.

I have heard that in LA(along with other parts of Cali) there are more models than photographers(not counting the GWCs). I was told it is easy to go out to LA and pick up some work while on vacation. Anyone else heard this or better yet anyone else do this? I just have a hard time believing it.

I would not be suprised.....few years back I visited my friend in LA...jeezzzz there were beautiful women all over the place.....everywhere you looked....so I imagine even if half the women I saw were looking to get into movies or modeling work for photographer must abound.....let me know when you're going....I'll be right there..LOL....yeah...like my wife would understand that one...LOL

I'm not sure I quite understand this question. I would guess this would be the case almost anywhere.

quick clarification on the question.

I was told in La(and other areas of Cali), a photographer would be overwhelmed with work shooting new models or first time models. They could make their livnig doing just that. I am wondering if anyone knows anything?

Message me and let's take a trip because that sure isn't the case here in Ohio.

I see many models with no experience, with photos that look like they were taken with a disposible camera. But when you message them about doing a shoot, they won't even respond. What are they thinking or is it that they are getting so many requests from photographers they can't even respond to them all?

Sorry for changing the subject but this has been grinding me for awhile.

I know, i know(allow me to hi-jack my own thread for a sec) They either don't respond or they do, then no-call/no-show or my personal fav is the $75 an hour 2 hour minimum with cell phone camera pics.

So I am guessing this thing with LA is only a myth as no one knows anything about it. I'm still thinking about a road trip though. Maybe a cross country drive with scheduled shoots at most stops(next summer Photoman 754).

There is a reason that the "adult" [read here "porn"] industry is concentrated in SoCal - and it isn't the weather.

If that were true none of us Los Angeles based photographers would need our day jobs. I'd bet if you asked, you'd find quite a few us still do need a day job to pay the rent. But, if you find that I'm missing something please feel free to pass the info along.

Yes it's true. In Cali, models grow on trees and it rains beer.

I live in Ocala, Florida.....and even the Hooter girls are no great shake.....

If I were a single guy....a much YOUNGER single guy.....California is where I'd be as a photographer....

Oh, it's very true that there are a ton of great looking ladies here. But, I think the real question from the OP was "are they willing to pay a photographer for pictures?". Nope. In most cases they want to be paid even when they have no experience. A lot of girls seem to think that being pretty is the only requirement for being a model or an actress.

Courtesy MM's search function:

There are 1831 MM models between 18 and 35 within 25 miles of downtown LA, but there are 1515 MM photographers in the same area.

Obviously, sites like these are not necessarily statistically relevant, but you can probably compare the ratio to your own area and get a decent feel for the market.

There are more models here in California than orange trees and they're all very humble and kind and everyone loves to smile.

Oh yes, Sunny Southern Californey here I come!  Two girls for every guy ....as the song says.

Sun tanned beach blonde babes everywhere you look - you can't escape them!  And they're all rich too!  Thousands of them out on the boardwalk wearing thongs and attacking every guy who happens to walk by with a camera around his neck.

It's tough living here, I tells ya!  So many girls, so little time.  I have to be especially careful walking on Hollywood Blvd...... All the wannabe starletts can somehow just sense that I'm a photographer and won't leave me alone.  I can't even walk into Fredricks and buy a boa or pair of opera gloves without being attacked.  But at least I'm safe in a store.  It's more dangerous out on the road in my Ferrari.  That's a dead giveaway that I'm a photographer, since all photographers in Los Angeles drive Ferrari's, we don't even have to have a camera with us.

To the member who heard that Los Angeles was the "porn" capital of the World, well, I don't know about the "porn" capital, but Los Angeles  **IS** the MOVIE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD, so that might have 'some' effect.

Gotta go.....  the line of girls waiting at my door and waving money is starting to wrap around the block again.

There are so many models wanting to hire photographers that they have a new system.  The porn girls line up to the left and the mainstream girls line up to the right.

All the photographers form a semi-circle.  When the ref fires the starting pistol, the models charge the photographers and they get to pay any photographer to she her that they can manage to kiss.

In the event that two models kiss the same photographer, he gets to set the order and is also allowed to add an exploitation surcharge since two models demand that he service them.

For photographers with stamina, there are special provisions mid-week where the leftover models gather to pick up the scraps.  All photographers are given special platinum American Express cards and are provided mansions at no charge to make it easy for them to spend all the money.

Sure there is a lot of talent there, but on both side fo the fence,  Every small town wanna be movie star who got the lead in their high-school production, won a beauty pageant, or a bikini contest, thinks they are going to make it big in LA,, so yes the model talent in LA is very good, it has  more of a cross over into actors/actresses as well, i liked that, it seemed models that work on their acting, have a better range of looks as well.   But every photographer who won a high-school competition, went to an art school or got published in a local paper, from around the world move to LA as well, the competition is tough probably tougher than most places,  what is so cool about LA, is there are 24 hour labs, not a big deal now since digital,  but also places that you can rent equipment, or buy more professional film/cards at 3 in the morning.  On movie sets, everybody working on them is a photographer or was a photographer.

i grew up between los angeles and london.i visit los angeles very often. my take on the situation is that unlike the midwest where we live, los angeles is an entertainment oriented city. beautiful people come there from all over the world in order to break into show biz. therfore the competition for attention is fierce.unlike ohio wher even ugly women can get an attitude if you so much as say hello, pretty women in los angeles are a dime a dozen and arent so fast to blow off the opprotunity to work with a good photographer so a photographer my not have to pay models to pose for them in fact models often have to pay photographers to aid in portfolio development.

I'm from Cali. If you drive a new BMW convertable (at least!) and snort lots of coke you can get some tight-looking little Rock-Star bitches to hang out with you and talk about their modeling careers. Just don't run out of anything or they will be gone like Elvis! If you hang out your sign and start a Photography Business they will be all over you, telling you how much they charge. Other than that, it is just like anywhere else except too crowded, bad air, unbearable heat in summer and three times more expensive. Of course, like anything there is a good side and a bad side so we'll talk about the bad side another time.

I'm assuming you're talking about yuckville [LA.]
Don't call LA "Cali" like there's nothing else in the state.  Thanks.
