Ok let me rephrase Part 2.

If you have done some scandalous nude or fetish/erotic modeling/acting  work..will it hurt your career?

or becomes a collector's item..

You mean a REAL career, or a modeling career? I'd say if you have a real career that requires you to be a true blue professional and work with the public, then yes it could hurt you majorly.

It depends on the career and the part of the world. I think if you are planning to teach elementary school in the midwest US, that is one thing. If you are planning to be a doctor in NYC, that is another.

I would think that if it is a fine art nude then in 88% of the "cases" it would not be harmful.

I sent you a PM..

Like they said above, it depends on your career.  I'm in the military, so I have to be very careful about what jobs/shoots I do.  That means no erotic/porn/fetish modeling and any nude (or implied) has to be carefully screened.  (My rule is, if I think my command would have an issue with it, then it's best not to push it since I love my job)  But all the photographers I've worked with have been amazingly understanding because they know why I have certain filters.  Since I'm a "plus model", I end up more on the commercial end anyway, so it's not a big deal.  But you basically have to figure out what your priorities are and go from there.  If you want to be a professional fetish model, then go for it.  If you want to be Miss America, maybe not. wink

Though I did note that you used "scandalous" to describe the pics.  You can definitely shoot nude without it being scandalous or career-hurting.  You just have to be selective.

It CAN hurt, but it's not LIKELY.
If you do pics that a future employer might consider "innapropriate" it would require both the pics turning up & you being in a job (like teaching or government employ) where they could be construed as harmful to the position.
Even then in many cases past "indiscretions" versus current behavior can be a major factor unless you lie when signing some sort of contract that says you've never done such things.
But realistically, the chances of pics of you turning up & hurting you is VERY small.  It's an boogeyman, like the nigh-fictional "My head might be pasted in to a porn ad" fears.
Anything bad MIGHT happen but risks are pretty low & you'd lead an awfully limited life if you only based it on them.

I actually had this same concern since I'm off to law school in the fall and obviously have no problem doing artistic nude/implied nude work.  I was told by a very professional photographer that my work would not hurt or hinder my future career.

I'd imagine if you somehow became a famous actress it could hurt you. Look at cases where Cameron Diaz had to sue people to keep from getting her topless photos released.

porn... yeah, that might hurt you. depending on what your goals in life are.
hard core fetish.. maybe
artistic nudes... no, that won't hurt you. heck, i worked for a presidential campaign and they all knew what i did.
fashion... no
commercial... no

cameron diaz just didn't want them out there. it wasn't because it would have hurt her career.

last time i checked it was legal for women to model.

Can nudes/fetish/etc effect your career?  Yes, but it all depends on what kind of career you have.

I actually know of a model who recently had to give up doing burlesque because her "Software Industry" job was frowning on it, and some of the modeling she was doing.

And it's for this very reason (amongst others) that I've never pursued doing nudes.

It's not clear to me how it might hurt Diaz... She just didn't want them out. Matter of personal preference and controlling her image I think.  I can't imagine people deciding they wouldn't see a movie she was in or wouldn't hire her because of it. Fifty years ago, different story.

Shouldn't it be enough of an example though that Cameron Diaz wasn't happy with her nudes getting it out?

Why?  She made a personal choice, not a career choice.  Lots and lots of actresses have done nudes, including several Academy Award winners.  Somehow it doesn't seem to hurt their careers.

Except a previous set of topless photos had turned up online before the set that generated all the publicity, and during the trial not only did some of the stills turn up online, but so did multiple copies of the VIDEO.
Go do a Google image search for Cameron Diaz & you'll find a nice color shot of her in a dominatrix outfit with her b(0)(0)bies showing while she hauls some guy around on a chain.
It didn't hurt her one bit & wouldn't have done so any more than Madonna's nudes popping up hurt her.  Vanessa William's nudes HELPED her.  Sure, they cost her the Miss America crown, but bought her enough publicity that people remembered her name & she got a good career AFTER.  And Vanessa's nudes included lesbian sex & BDSM gear!
The same can be said of pretty much every actress who has had early nudes pop up.

I think it's more of an example that she's such a horrendous bitch that she took a perfectly legit offer from the photographer & she ruined his life over it.
I never thought she was a great actress & now I know she's an awful person.  I'd like to see her career hurt not because she posed nude but because people boycot her work for what a terrible human being she is.

Actually I saw a story about her where they mentioned that she is horribly rude to people who ask for her autograph. She has been known to insult & ridicule them. Gee, that makes a great impression doesn't it?
