Tearsheets Or Pay?
This Bey cat is too sensitive. Jul 22 05 12:42 am Link Posted by Jack D Trute: What Jack? You mean your poop don't stink? Well, I still don't wanna step in it! LOL Posted by XtremeArtists: Cat? where where? Don't tell Jack! He might chase after it! Jul 22 05 12:44 am Link Posted by Jack D Trute: I'd show it to the people at Italian Vogue, because they'd probably understand the decision to print my photo. If it's good enough for Nicole Frankel, it's good enough for me. For now. Jul 22 05 12:49 am Link A tear sheet is usually worthless to me. UNLESS.... The photographer is great, the model is great, the magazine is good quality etc. I do ads that end up in magazines all the time. I don't need tears... I have no control over the makeup etc with the paid ads so I don't normally use them or even show them to anyone. I get contacts now and then about doing FHM, Teaz, Maxim, muscle, muscle and fitness etc. NO thank you. I don't need this type of tear because the paying clients (the ones with money) are not going to be impressed by seeing that stuff in my book....scantily clad glamour models with lots of makeup and hooker shoes are not going in my book. You can pay me to do it but I sure wouldn't do it for the tear. Jul 22 05 12:49 am Link Posted by Patrick Walberg: Posted by Jack D Trute: What Jack? You mean your poop don't stink? Well, I still don't wanna step in it! LOL Posted by XtremeArtists: Cat? where where? Don't tell Jack! He might chase after it! Sure my poop has an aroma. That is how you attract the ladies. Jul 22 05 12:49 am Link Posted by Mary: Wow, look, look, an intelligent human. Jul 22 05 12:51 am Link Posted by Jack D Trute: Nope Mr. God...er, Dog spelled backwards...The quality of the publication IS the important matter. Why on Earth would British Vogue lower itself just to show a mutt? They wouldn't, and those putting their paws on the publication would expect nothing but the best quality...as that is their reputation. That reputation becomes the Quality of the tear sheet, every bit as important as the money. Jul 22 05 12:51 am Link What are the chances this cat is shooting for any Vogue? Jul 22 05 12:53 am Link Posted by area291: Cash money. Duh. Jul 22 05 12:53 am Link Please and thank you. British Vogue? Give me the tear. Actually, he can keep the $200 and I'll just go get a better job. Jul 22 05 12:55 am Link Posted by tdrmaquillage: British Vogue? Give me the tear. Actually, he can keep the $200 and I'll just go get a better job. EXACTLY. $200.00 isn't enough, I want 3 times that amount and a guarantee in writing that my name will not be found in the magazine. Jul 22 05 01:15 am Link I needed this one! Jul 22 05 01:18 am Link Jul 22 05 01:21 am Link Posted by Jack D Trute: If Jack takes a screen capture, he will have a tear. Wouldn't $200 bucks be better? Jul 22 05 01:23 am Link i just snorted coffee through my nose - tooooooooo funny! Jul 22 05 01:23 am Link Posted by XtremeArtists: Ding, Ding, Ding, Jul 22 05 01:25 am Link Posted by Jack D Trute: Posted by XtremeArtists: I did not know you had it in you. Or did Mary tell you to say that so that it would just seem like you have a brain? I've been reading her posts and learning while I steal emoticons.... Jul 22 05 01:27 am Link its always an option to fake a tear, its free and takes just a few minutes. Jul 22 05 01:29 am Link Oh that is tempting but a bit too easy and I want Reese to like me. Jul 22 05 01:30 am Link And people who agree with me are the coolest people of all. Jul 22 05 01:43 am Link Everyone done with the pot shots? Good. Here's a few facts... If you don't know anything about the mag, don't talk bad about it, because you only sound like an idiot. Black Mens, Smooth, and mags of that nature for the most part don't pay the models a red cent for their shoots. They're lucky to even get a hotel room and a plane ticket. But models flock to their mags in droves. Why? Exposure and tears, which have landed them paying jobs because the right people are indeed watching. So obviously we're talking about 2 different markets, the black market and the white market. Plain and simple. You don't like it? Too effin bad, that's just the way it is. Lastly, you again missed the point when I talked about my Atlanta lifestyle. It wasn't to say "look how cool I am," the emphasis was that if I was living like that off my camera, obviously I was doing something right.... GWC??? HAHAHA!!!I'll be that. At least i'm not bilking girls out of their money, taking cheap porn pics of them, putting them on a paysite and telling them they're going to be stars. lol Now, carry on. Jul 22 05 04:26 am Link For me personally it depends on a few things to do with the tearsheet. 1. What magazine is it? How does it relate to my career? (Example - most models would jump at a Vogue Editorial for no pay - but for a local paper.... hmmm not so much) 2. Who is the target of the tearsheet - magazines like Vogue are read by everyone (almost) in the industry so that is good exposure - being a model for Woodworkers Weekly or something is not reaching the appropriate target market. 3. Will my name actually appear there with a link to my work online - extremely uncommon but if it was a small project I might consider this instead of pay, but that also depends on number 2 and 4. 4. How many issues are produced/how much readership do they have? I think if you think about all four points and are still interested without getting paid then go for it. Jul 22 05 05:26 am Link Posted by Monsante Bey: Is that your Plan B? Jul 22 05 08:04 am Link Posted by Monsante Bey: Monsante Bey, Jul 22 05 08:12 am Link If I was the model, I'd take the $200, then go buy the magazine and pull the sheet myself and put it in my book Jul 22 05 08:29 am Link Posted by Monsante Bey: As far as "terrible tears," Look at my work, does it LOOK like I would produce a terrible tear? hmmmm...are you really sure, you want to ask for a critique?.. Jul 22 05 08:58 am Link Posted by Patrick Walberg: Posted by RStephenT: Posted by Monsante Bey: Maybe I am missing something, but is there EVER, EVER a reason to go on about what you make, how cool you are etc. and etc... Is this the kind of impression you want to give other MM members... and Theda is right(God I hate to admit that) but I have seen way better work... are you serious? Don't Answer... just go away. What? Huh? Someone thinks they are cooler than the rest of us? Hummm ... well I know what it's like to be dead ... it don't get any colder than that! LOL Patrick I'm with you. The party life and a bunch of crap doesn't makeone cool. Beside cool is only three letters away from fool. I think I have got it made because I am happly married for 14 years, have 2 wonderful little girl, a 1920 house in the country that is killing me, and it's taking me years to pay of my subaru that I put half down. And the best party I threw this year involved tubing down a river and a blue grass band with the little ones dancing in the yard until the witching hour. Jul 22 05 09:12 am Link Wow. I really don't think this question is about the actual physical tearsheet verus $200. I think it's about being published OR being paid. Only the most brain dead would rather have a $5 dollar magaizne than a $200 check. Only the second most brain dead would question that. I hope... This isn't about a black vs. white market. It's about the stature of the magazine. The only color that counts here is green, right? Jul 22 05 09:14 am Link Posted by theda: Pionts taken and conceeded. Most I agree, but I would add that I do this kind of work because I love doing it. Jul 22 05 09:51 am Link Posted by Monsante Bey: I never noticed that you even mentioned a magazine, I was making my comments very general...answering the questions at hand. Now that you mentioned magazines I can honestly tell you, no, you would have to pay me my full rate to work for them...reason, I have never heard of them and they don't sound like they would provide tears I could use...has nothing to do with the "black market" it has to do with the quality of tear, the quality of photography, the quality of model and the quality of the magazine...also what is the distribution? demographic? who purchases the magazine? are they the kind of people with big business that could bring me future work? does it distribute to Art Directors? Jul 22 05 10:28 am Link Posted by Mary: My section hasn't come out yet, should be next month if not September. I have to check on that. When it does, i'll drop a scan or two in my port. Jul 22 05 12:19 pm Link I get contacts now and then about doing FHM, Teaz, Maxim, muscle, muscle and fitness etc. Yo Mz. Mary I feel you about your rates. You got all the rights to be as selective as you are BUT have to check you about the diss you given Teaze magazine if it is the same one i get. The one I get has the glam models but it has Jul 22 05 05:06 pm Link Agreed. And I think Mary and I were just saying that we don't work for that rate, generally speaking. There are exceptions. I'll talk L.A. since that's where I am; Teen (or whatever it's called now) Magazine here in L.A. pays around $200 for it's stories. it's a good nationwide mag. So you'll generally get $200 AND a good tear. Flaunt pays nothing, but it's Flaunt. I think when I've done things for InStyle, they paid around $300 AND I got a tear in InStyle (it's worth bringing up, however, that the 1st InStyle I ever did I still didn't use because half the page was taken up by an eBay ad). So the magazine makes a difference. Generally speaking, however - and i was speaking generally since there was no magazine name mentioned - my rate is a lot higher than $200. And if it's a junk project it's a junk project and I'm not going to do it at all. I don't care what they're offering. That's not a pot shot. Just a fact. Jul 22 05 10:21 pm Link Posted by Monsante Bey: Neither of which has anything to do with the quality of your work. It could be great; it could suck. Trying to justify it based on a personal attacks and having been in print is silly. (Bleep, I've been in print far more than SEVERAL times, and it doesn't make my work any better.) Posted by Monsante Bey: Always good advice. Why aren't you taking it? Posted by Monsante Bey: You had time to make them, though, didn't you? (See above.) Jul 23 05 02:00 am Link Posted by Kevin Connery: Just type "Damn," "Shit" or "Fuck." You confused me with "Bleep."
