not exactly, but, yesterday night I was taking photos of a guy, because it has been almost 3 months by now that he kept asking me every week to shoot him, and I got way too bored.
after the usual "normal" photo, he asked for something more crazy, trash/gore/horror. So be it, I told myself, hoping that seeing how horrible I could turn his figure, would make him think twice before taking picture again, at least with me smile
holy cow! how I was wrong sad
he already asked to take other picture next week!
coz he looked so nasty and he loved it !  sad sad sad sad

so, the question now is, I make people look like they're a monster, and they love it... I make them look "normal" (have in mind that most of them are alternative every day of their life), and still they love the change of style... what should I do then, to make them go away? yikes

if you wonder why, I don't want to take pictures right now, I'm in a complete messy state of mind.

LOL, awwwww poor you

ok here's what I do if I don't want to work with them.  I tell them that I am not currently seeking their look for any of my projects but will keep them in mind if anything comes up that I can use them for.  and I really do keep them in mind.

If I flat out don't want to work with them I just tell them, I'm sorry but you just don't have the look that I am needing for my book and I sometimes direct them to another photographer who may be able to shoot with them.

Just say no,
Be honest and tell them that you are not in the "headspace" right now and are taking a sabbatical

Already tried big_smile
it doesn't work.

"i'm a white sheet, do whatever you want with me, I don't care as long as you're taking the photo"  that's the reply I got from him, when I told that I really didn't have a clue on how to take pictures of him, and declined to shoot.
He went to another photographer, took some pictures, and then, everytime he encoutered me @ the club, kept asking WHEN we do the photos?
after months of this, I gave up.

OMG!!!! it's like you have a crazy stalker guy fan boy or something. LOL well, I guess you just have to be blunt and tell him no i don't want to shoot you now or any time in the future.  I would probably be super mean if they kept asking me month after month.  that's just crazy.

I think you misunderstand people. At a basic level people want a picture that captures who they are. You only really do that with a portrait shot. I've never heard of anyone who was unhappy to have a good portrait shot of themselves unless they have serious self image issues.

When I shoot a portrait I try to capture something of someones soul.

The only way out of your dilemma is to say no, or take a really bad picture. I would go with saying no smile

I've just recently done my first major paid shoot, and much of what I've done in the past has been primarily TFP/TFCD and I believe that a beginning model (especially for their first shoot) doesn’t deserve to be paid highly, and should feel privileged if they receive any monetary compensation. I know for myself if a photographer asks me if I would be willing to do a shoot with them for either TFP or TFCD I have ASKED (notice: did not demand) if it would be possible for them to cover some of the travel expense if they're somewhat distant or provide a free meal simply to defray the costs.  Thus far I haven’t had any confrontations yet and the photographers have been very understanding. On the other hand if I inquire about working with a photographer for TFP/TFCD I expect nothing but some great images and hopefully I'll have learned something at the end of the day.

sounds like he has a MEMEME issue...but, you DO do wonderful work, so I'd take it as a compliment and let him know (as another poster said) that you are not shooting for a while.

OR, you could take a stand and tell him he's burning a hole in your camera lens and "those pesky items are 'spensive!"

sorry...it's early..hehe

Wow... I think I might possibly just go with yelling the title of this thread at the guy.

I'm blunt though, hehe.

Okay, maybe not yelling... but I would probably "just say no."

Another idea- say you're going to do a shot of him in the distance of a desert landscape, drive him to the locale and tell him to walk a hundred yards away or so, then hop back in the car and drive off.

I'm sorry- it's really late... I'm not being helpful, and probably not very funny either. smile

If you're charging him, and he's satisfied with the images, why would you want to throw away money?

Unless of course he's trying to date you on the sly. Then you have yourself a sticky situation.... No pun intended. lol

I can't charge people for these:

and yes, this is the guy I was talking about, and these are probably the best photos that I took of him.
I left out the one where he's eating raw meat, they're too much to be posted on the general forum.

Erh... while I empathize with your original predicament... especially since even being direct kept him coming back... I gotta say - guy looks good! I like his personal style, or at least the fact he isn't afraid to show it.

And those feral, predatorial shots... well, I really like those *blush*

My guess is, he really wanted a chance to prove he could do a good job. It appears you and he simply have artistic differences, but nonetheless - you did do a good job on someone in whom you saw little inspiration. Perhaps you didn't even intend it, but maybe your all-around good attitude just made it happen anyway big_smile

Remember: people will pay for what you can produce that they find incredible, not what you can produce that you find incredible.

Or would being able to turn this into monetary gain still not be enough for you to actually want to do it?

Hey Nihilus smile

I see your point, but from my perspective, depending on the size of the monetary gain... I'm not sure if I'd shoot a style in which I'm not all that interested. For example, shooting glamour, even for pay, would only remind me I'm not getting paid for the stuff I really want to do - at the moment, fashion/editorial. And that's disheartening.

But I wouldn't be stupid - if it's especially useful money, survival takes priority over precisely following my dream - and that's encouraging smile So, it all would depend how inspired and excited I am by the shoot, for whatever reason... lack of enthusiasm does show, and I owe it to the person who's paying me to do my best.

Can we say EEEEWWWWW??????????  I'm all for stretching and delving into what you "Aren't" after all modeling is a form of acting. but good grief! those are just downright scary! I've seen other "alternative" pics  in that genre that didn't scream I'm a demon! lolol YOu can see it in his eyes he gets off on that in more ways than one!

BUT....... I guess if he pays YOU to take the pics nobody says you have to keep the copyrights! Take the money and give him the pics and when you've had enough tell him he has burned you out and thanks but NO THANKS!

Charge him a very high sitting fee and a nice fat price per print. Period. Or quit whining about your inability to communicate. Tell him to leave you alone, that simple.

Yes you can charge him if he is happy with the images and loves your work then by all means let him know you are only able to accept paid sittings and charge him a sitting fee + prints.

Hand your new ecstatic customer a stack of business cards and get those referrals from all the others at the clubs who also get turned down for sittings by *normal* photographers.

When your calendar gets full bump your prices a bit.
