who don't like to work with female photographers? I wanted to pose this question so I can have an objective opinion when models say they are scared to work with a male photographer (I work fairly novice models) and I know that they are most likely nervous.

For instance, I had one model say she likes to shoot with men b/c it helps her feel sexy.

So please remember that this is just advice to model who are starting out. I want to encourage them to get some courage.

It's all about the quality of the images for me.  When I look at photographer ports, I treat them as Asexual until I email for a shoot.  I do wish there were more female photographers here that wanted to shoot though.

The sex of the photographer is not an issue for me. I am only interested in the quality of the work. However, I have to say that I do tent to prefer effeminate male MUA, as the ones I have worked with have been very sweet and attentive in a completely relaxed way. With some women MUA I have experienced some tension when I have tried to make constructive comments to help the process. Of course, I would love to work with really talented photographers, MUA and other models without of either sex and make wonderful pictures together.

I actually prefer working with female photographers. I just feel more comfortable and that we're naturally more on the same wavelength. With men, even though they're behaving totally appropriately, it sometimes feels like they're trying to devour you with their camera. It can be a relief to take that dynamic out of the equation.

I get both sides of the coin as well, as a female photographer. Ive had girls who admit to not being able to "play" to the camera because there is a chick standing behind it...they cant seem to "flirt" or "get into the mood" of the shoot. But I have also had girls who have said they are comfortable with a female photographer, especially in lingerie and nude or topless shooting. On the flip side, I have also had similar reactions to the male models I have worked with. Some are comfortable in my studio...a few have tried to flirt around for I dont know what and its kinda funny. Its not going to score you extra prints, but it does lighten the mood, haha. But I have also had some men who just froze up. Either way, I just hope that when a model decides to work with me for a shoot, its based on the quality of my work...not for the parts I have under my own clothes! Im sure once a model is totally comfortable with his or herself, they wont have any problems with any gender of photographer they work with...so long as the work is something they'd actually like to see in their book. Thats my 2 cents.

I could care less.  I've worked with some righteous ladies.  I even let one tie me up.  It's all good.

So maybe the question should be:

"Would you rather work with a male photographer or a lesbian photographer"
Both might hit on you smile

I dont worry about people hitting on me, but the only female photographer I worked with took my $$ and gave me 0 usable pictures. I dont think that affects working with females in the future but there dont seem to be any in my area.

Naturally it is the quality of the work that is most important and I am always open to working with photographers of both sexes. With that said,... Female photographers do make me more nervous than men. With a male photographer, I usually know that they find me attractive and I feel comfortable flaunting my stuff for their cameras because I don't feel that I am being judged. With women, although I am sure they are not judging either, I tend to feel more self conscious because a woman's eye is slightly more critical and because I have had bad experiences with women in general (outside of photography/modeling).

I don't think so. It's just a normal human thing to have preferences.

It's funny..i had someone look at my port and then ask me if I was a lesbian. Whether true or not, it is funny that someone thought just because i take pictures of only women (so far) that i must ultimately date women. I could honestly say, if i had to pose, i could do so in front of either gender. Like most others have said, it is about quality, not genitalia.

I don't think that's true at all. People have preferences for personal reasons and a lot of those reasons are valid. Modeling is about creating something and you can't create art with anyone whom you are uncomfortable with. To say that just because someone is not 100% confident with every photographer rules out a lot of people, including people like me who have social anxiety. That's completely unfair because regardless of my anxieties, I like to make art and personally, I think I'm fairly good at it.

Another thing to keep in mind is that how new a model is makes a difference. The more experience one has in front of the camera, the more comfortable they begin to feel with the whole process. It is not impossible to grow out of male/female photographer preferences with time.

I shoot women almost exclusively, because women are what I have available to me to shoot. My models seem to be pretty comfortable with me; I've never spoken to a model who had a reluctance to work with me because I'm female. I wouldn't say I'm critical of other women's bodies, but rather, that I know the spots women tend to feel self-conscious about and try to pose them accordingly.

The only "problem," I guess, is that I shoot lingerie with an extremely fashion-oriented bent-- so models that would (hypothetically) come to me hoping for pictures that look like they came from a Maxim pinup would be disappointed to find they looked more like an ad from Cosmo.

I am a female photographer and that hasn't happened yet.
Most of the ladies I shoot loved working with me and said they felt more comfortable. I tell them to bring an escort if they like and most always still come alone. Which is cool.

But, and this is just my opinion so models if this is you don't lash at me lol....

but in my opinion, if you feel you have to sex up or flirt it up to the "photographer" who has to be the opposite sex, to get inspiration to be sexy and pose right, then you aren't ready to be a model or are not a real model in my eyes.

I work with mainly female models, because there are very few male models in the area.  I have not had a problem with any female models being uncomfortable with me (that I know of).  As far as getting a sexy shot...I just have them think about their significant other to get the look.

I need more input from models who DON'T prefer working w/ female photographers.

This is so I can help boost the courage to the novice models who tend to work with me or other female photographers in the area. They are scared to work with MALE photographers. They are new to the biz and I understand their hesitation but I want to help get them out of that mindset b/c their are plenty of very professional and non-pervy male photographers in our area.

But so far, I understand the statement about feeling less judged and more sexy around a male photographer. This topic is just to help me give advice on both sides when models ask me questions about the biz.

I don't know much but learning along the way.

Thank you so far for your words!

If the photographer's work is good, male or female, I don't care, a priori. I like meeting new people, and that's that. However, if I am with a male photographer I don't know, I don't mind shooting alone with him, but I'd rather have a make-up artist or a stylist nearby, especially for topless/nudes. I feel better that way.

I tend to talk a lot before a shoot, to get to know the peoples I'm working with and to make sure noone is shy around me. Female photographers, stylist and make-up artists tend to enjoy the talking a lot, same thing for many of the male photographers, hair stylists and make-up artists... what causes me trouble are cold, aloof persons who don't take the time to talk to establish some trust. Most of these peoples are males, but it's nothing I am not able to cope with.

I don't have a preference, and have never really thought about it.  Every photographer I've worked with has been very professional and fun to work with.  I guess I'm lucky!

sign of a professional model, being able to turn it on, as would an actor or actress, regardless who's behind the camera ...

just two cents,

k here's what I'm not getting.  a novice model who is scared to work with male photographers but who also needs you to help build their courage to work with female photographers?  Hello, maybe if some says they want to be a model but is phobic around cameras or photographers they should find another endeavour!

I'm a female photographer and I've never had (or wanted) to convince someone to work with me because of my gender.  Either they like and respect what I'm trying to bring or not.   Trying to convince a model to work with me would be like trying to convince a date for the prom.  The interest and energy is there or it ain't.

We all have our own ways of communicating and acting during photo sessions.  I don't have a problem indicating to a male or female if what they are doing is hot. (notice I said what they are doing not if they are.  I'm only interested in what they're bringing to the session, not anything else).    If they're a good model they respond to positive feedback no matter what gender.  If they are a play model then god only knows what goes on in the brain.....

I'd go with lesbian. If a lesbian hit on me I might be a little flattered, if a male photographer hit on me the same way I'd be creeped out.

I understand the confusion. I am not saying that they are scared to work with females. I am saying the opposite. They are TOO comfortable working w/ just women. It's just that I constantly hear hesitation from them when they talk about branching out to male photographers. I am trying to talk to them as a friend (somewhat) and tell them something like "Some models prefer shooting with male photographers b/c of __________"

These are brand new TFPs. Most of the time I am their first or 2nd shoot. I won't expect nothing more out of them in professionalism until they get more experience. But as a former model, I did prefer shooting with women photographers. I just want to give them two sides of opinion when I talk to them.
