Hi all,

I have been here only few days, but I am very happy that I joined! I am professional photographer and have been trying to find place in where similar photographers, models and stylists can meet... but even so I have joined in many places, haven't never been very satisfied. Usually all the web-porfolios tend to fill up with amateur-porn or something like that. "Guys with the Camera" -types photographers and "Chicks who like to pose" -type models seem to be everywhere!

So, basicly it has been so, that in those other places 98-percent of portfolios and photos have been... something that I am not looking for at all. (Because I am looking only that professional thing, serious stuff.) But here I think at least 30% - 40% of portfolios are very professional. Just what I have been looking for to cooperate and change ideas and opinions.

Do you feel the same? As I said I am new here, so this is my first impression... but so far liked very much it in here, and spend many hours looking all great portfolios.

As me coming from Finland, I also understand it might be little difficult to arrange test-shoots etc. But at least I will try to do so with some MM-models whose portfolios I like. Naturally, it isn't easy since Finland is here in North-Europe... but, in the future I am sure something good will happen. smile

Yeah, basicly that's about it. Just wanted to say that I liked it here. Hopefully my first impression isn't all wrong?

Best regards,
Kalle

Model Mayhem has something like 141256 people on it. You have to go to the people you feel drawn to.  What ever skill or look level you want is on MM. Some of the best in the world and way lots of adverage people trying to make a little dream come true.

I am a GWC and it is because of the quality of people on MM that I want to better myself.

MM does have a lot of really great people on it. I've met some cool people and found some cool people in other places that I really want to work with as well.
I think that you really get out of things exactly what you put into them.

I want to say first; as a self admitted guy with a camera or five, I take my amateur porn very seriously ;^)

No, really I find the level of work here pretty good and certainly better than average. Sure there is everything from real trash to fantastic art. Me, I kind of like it all and find even the junk worth looking at, even if it is nothing more than a reminder of what not to do.

Of course as an amateur (how I hate that term when it is used condescendingly by some ... really I would rather be thought of as a artist with no desire to make a living snapping pictures) I still feel that it is an interesting place to hangout, exchange ideas and meet other like minded artist.

Your observations are correct...and you've only been here for a few days!

I think for whatever reason one joins MM, he/she can get something positive and useful out of it (it's just that sometimes, you really have to LOOK for it!)  smile

Welcome to MM!

Good point there Golden Light, and it works as well for me too... and this one I had to thank photographers, stylists and models here in MM!

The thing is, that here in Finland the fashion photography is "given out" of very small group of people 3-8, who will do 90% of all shots for local "fashion" magazines. And those same people have done it for several years and years now, repeating their same shots year after year. In my opinion there is at least 100 great photographers of this area in here, and the mags should use them equally, but they won't. It is a very small circle of solid friends working together.

So... that is why (as you can see from the text of my portfolio) I have decided to give up the whole **** of fashion photography, and move to glamour or something else. I do get to shoot fashion quite a lot, but it is only to fashion designers catalogues, model-agencies etc, because they like to get "fresh" photos. But it is not difficult to count, that catalogues come out once or twice a year... mags 12 times a year. So, if you don't belong in to that small circle of mag's friends, everything is much harder.

BUT! Thanks to all the positive feedback (tags, comments, mails) what I have got here in MM from members who are in the same industry and have great portfolios... I have been seriously re-thinking about giving up this fashion thing. And I have decided not to. I will give it two more years or so. Just have to try harder and get even more catalogues done. (Would also like to go abroad to work for other magazines in there, like my brother have done, but just can't move out now... have to stay here.)

So I sincerely would like to thank you this whole MM-thing and people in here. It is not just ego thing, but it is more like proving myself, that people who have seen international photos and still giving good feedback to me... it kind of proves me, that those people who work inside Finnish magazines... they don't know it all. And they should come out from their little boxes more often. smile

Yep, I am very happy that I find out this place. In other places alike I wouldn't ever met as many people whose opinions I trust and look up to.

My next goal in here is to build up good network of people pushing and helping each others in here. Let's see how it works out. Already have find out some GREAT portfolios that have inspired me and got me new ideas. And I think that in my next photo-shoots some pieces of those ideas will come to alive.

Keep it up everyone! The great work you do, I mean. RocK! Long live MM! wink

Dammit!  It's only a matter of time before we're outnumbered!  lol

big_smile I love your humour! As I said earlier too... you have the best "About me" -section I have ever seen.

But still back in to original subject, after being here few more days now... I can just imagine how well this MM works for people who travels in between different places like Milan, London, Paris, NYC... in here you can really find those talents from all areas. I know I have done! Just can't wait till I get all my stuff together and be able to travel more. Now I am little stucked to Finland and can't travel much. Darn.

Well, I'll just hope the "quality level" will stay the same in the future as well. wink

Well, maybe I should have made another topic, but because this is a matter of "quality level"... I end up using this.

The thing is that scouting different talents here now for awhile, I have noticed that even so there is some great talents what comes in to photography, it is rather difficult to find stylists. Especially excellent wardrobe stylists!

Where is the problem? Is it so, that us photographers sometimes just "forget" to give photos to stylists as well? It is easy to remember to give those to models, but I have to admit to being quilty for that too... forgetting MUA or stylist. Those quiet and humble friends of our's. Damn me. sad

So, what I have done now... I have asked those best and most professional stylists (what I know myself) to join here. To keep this thing working - and "quality level" as high as possible! wink At least some will join soon, one already did.

I'll recommend you fellow pro-photographer to do same! Bring those best wardrobe stylists, make-up artists, etc to here. Especially people from Europe (France, Italy, Scandinavia, Germany...) are missing badly. And the thruth is... we can't live without them! So, bring them on!

Cheers,
Kalle
