Is there a good way to find out about the numerous ShootOuts and Supershoots (multiple models & photographers, some mentoring) BEFORE they happen?  I'm not seeing the information soon enough to plan for them.

They probably have mailing lists to announce upcomming events, email them to get on the list or just check the sites regularly.  Also watch the forum at glamourmodels.com.

finally, try:

I know that meetup.com has a ton of them. I think its www.digcam.meetup.com and then you can put in your zip code for the ones in your area.

I'm planning one exclusively for iStockphoto photographers for September, and all I can say is: if you can't find one in your area, start one. Use the browse function to find photographers/models/MUA/Hair stylists in your area and put one together.
For mine, I found a wonderful yoga/tai chi studio that will rent the space for the day. I have 15 or so confirmed photographers, and at least 2 models so far. If I charge $100 per photographer, then I have $1500 to work with, that should be more than enough to pay for studio space, equipment rental (though most of my photographers are going to bring equipment so we shouldn't have to rent any), models, MUA, and Hair stylists. Most of the models that I have spoken to are more than happy to work TFCD because they are new and will jump at the chance to work with pro photographers with full support (MUA, etc...). This leaves me some cash to pay for good quality support staff.

May be a stretch from Tennessee... but Southern California has several 'multi model & photographer' events with dates listed at:  http://www.photodays.com   (including our own)... wink
