Ok...
Here's the thing.
Ive been in LA now for almost a year. A majority of the paid work I have been getting has been in the Adult industry.
While it does pay well, I am the type of person that wants to grow and excell in my field.
Fashion has been more my forte.
Plus Adult work cant go into my port.

The photographer I work with has told me that since 9-11 NYC has changed and the paying  jobs have moved to the West coast.
I really dont know if this is true since we have a great working relationship and it may be that she doesnt want toi lose me.
Now, I havent been back to NYC for 5 years now and I honestly dont know.

So my question is...
Is NYC still a good place for a MUA to be a self suffecient MUA or am I condemed to a life of porn?

Perhaps you didn't know this but LA is more about television and film.  If you stay in SoCal you'll spin your wheels if you don't direct yourself to that.

Yes- I realize that.
Thats why I wanted to know if NYC is still a place that a MUA can support themselves doing fashion oriented work.

I think that where there is a will there is a way, you are obviously talented Roshar. Maybe shop some agencies, and if you have no luck, try to get on some assistants lists. You'll just have to pound the pavement.

OK, I know this may not get you any closer to finding your answer....But, I really want you HERE, ROSHAR! If you don't move out here, I may be forced to move to California. And then I will become superficial and my boyfriend will join a gang and it will be all your fault! wink
Seriously, you my friend are talented and driven enough to be successful wherever you find yourself. I think you've already proven that to yourself.

Hey...

Becuase I'm married to a public school teacher I don't live in NYC and am not pursuing high fashion.  (Please don't debate me on this, the schools are awful there to be a teacher.  If it's a good school it still doesn't pay enough to support a family.)

However, I love fashion and I think that is a good place to go as a model.  It's a little bit different in my opinion for photographers.  But yes, the market changed immensely after 9/11 but what I have found is that it shrank rather than shifting per se.  A lot of people looking for work maybe had to move beyond New York and work for smaller companies elsewhere, but I would say move to New York, find a beautiful apartment in Brooklyn and never look back!

Sharon :-)

I meant to say "Model and stylist."  I think mayb even a better market as stylist than a model.  I love NYC.  Great food, absolutely wonderful people.  Every time I go there the locals treat me very very well and the only rude people I find are other tourists.

You guys are too funny!

Before we engage in tug-o-war I was just asking if the market has changed in NY.

I know someone said it shrank but I wanted to hear more opinions on that.

Dont worry, LA has me for a little while.........
