FUGGEDABOUDIT." I saw it on the way to the start line for the NYC Marathon and didn't have a camera, otherwise I would post an image for the forum. Maybe somebody from Brooklyn can post a snapshot. Jun 10 06 10:28 am Link The view from afar: 10 million people eating hot dogs made from cattle they've never seen graze and lox made from salmon they've never seen swim on buns and bagels made from wheat grown in fields they've never seen on soil they think of as dirt 10 million people living on tons of asphalt and concrete made from petroleum and minerals mined from pits other people's back yards and arcitc plains too far away to matter so they never have to see the grass that once kept Long Island from washing away 10 million people driving bumper to bumper in 4wd vehicles and fast sports cars on roads that never see mud, where speed is impossible in vehicles that have only sparkle utility 10 million people from all over the world crowded onto a tiny island never knowing the meaning of neighbor 10 million people coming together to create a cultural miracle insulating themselves from the basic miracles of life I've never been to NYC, and I'm sure some of my perceptions are warped. I'd love to see it some day, but I'm glad I don't live there. I dated a girl from Broolyn for a while, many years ago. She simply wasn't able to understand the meaning of a connection with the land or the value of knowing what your food ate. Several months with her made me both envy and grieve for the people in NYC. However I do think that an awful lot of people who live in areas where concrete and asphalt are hard to find would come up with similar words to mine when asked "what words that mean New York." To an awful lot of Americans, particularly in the west, New York is a big, wonderous, far-away place where many of the things we consider life's essentials are as rare as concrete and asphalt are where we live.
