Like if I was to ask you what is a New York look?
(would you say it's edgy, crisp, dull, loud? what would you say?)

There's a big green official New York State interstate highway sign, on the Brooklyn-side approach to the Verrazano Narrows Bridge that connects Brooklyn to Staten Island, that reads:  "Leaving Brooklyn?  FUGGEDABOUDIT."  I saw it on the way to the start line for the NYC Marathon and didn't have a camera, otherwise I would post an image for the forum.  Maybe somebody from Brooklyn can post a snapshot.

Sanders.

Hey don't make fun of my accent!  The "look" in New York is anything goes from the classy to the freaky and I mean freaky.  The freaks don't even get a second look -- it is part of our culture sorry to say! That is why they say there is no other place on the earth like New York!

What accent?  :-D

I was born and raised in New York and I love the diverse culture.  Not sorry in the least.  It's this blending that keeps it so entertaining at all times (hell, just riding the subway is a free show).  The New York "look" keeps me inspired in so many different ways, I wouldn't trade it in an instant.

an example of a 'new york' look:

a girl wearing a long knitted scarf around her neck with a couple of beaded necklaces or an exaggerated cross around her neck, a corduroy jacket, with tank top, a ruffled mini-skirt with some cowboy boots on or maybe even some converse all-star high tops.  oh and the hairstyle would be a pixie cut with hair goop to give it an 'I just got out of bed - NOT' look.

taking a pic of times square at 3am in the morning and its still crowded with people walking all over the place and traffic still a nightmare

yankee staduim... and a series of projects next to the stadium in the pic, lol

pics of broadway & lafayette and the traffic is a nightmare in addition to about 10 million people walking on one sidewalk, lol

a pic inside a subway station with camera shake (because of the new rules, cant shoot in the subway system like that except for exceptions, which means the camera shake is for sneaking the shot quickly... unless its on the L train, where you can take your dearest time, lol)

union square looking like a peace rally when its nothing more than skateboarders and regular people hanging out

and most of all, cant have a series of new york city shots without a shot of the manhattan or brooklyn bridge from either the promenade or from DUMBO

As a former New Yorker, well really Long Island (there is NO 'G' in Guyland)  NY is really the center of the universe.  London is the other center.

The view from afar:

10 million people
eating hot dogs made from cattle they've never seen graze
and lox made from salmon they've never seen swim
on buns and bagels made from wheat
grown in fields they've never seen
on soil they think of as dirt

10 million people
living on tons of asphalt and concrete
made from petroleum and minerals
mined from pits other people's back yards
and arcitc plains too far away to matter
so they never have to see the grass
that once kept Long Island from washing away

10 million people
driving bumper to bumper
in 4wd vehicles and fast sports cars
on roads that never see mud,
where speed is impossible
in vehicles that have only sparkle utility

10 million people
from all over the world
crowded onto a tiny island
never knowing the meaning of neighbor

10 million people
coming together to create a cultural miracle
insulating themselves from the basic miracles of life

I've never been to NYC, and I'm sure some of my perceptions are warped.  I'd love to see it some day, but I'm glad I don't live there.  I dated a girl from Broolyn for a while, many years ago.  She simply wasn't able to understand the meaning of a connection with the land or the value of knowing what your food ate.  Several months with her made me both envy and grieve for the people in NYC.

No offense intended to New York/ers.  I admitted that my perceptions of New York may be a bit warped.  However I do think that an awful lot of people who live in areas where concrete and asphalt are hard to find would come up with similar words to mine when asked "what words that mean New York."  To an awful lot of Americans, particularly in the west, New York is a big, wonderous, far-away place where many of the things we consider life's essentials are as rare as concrete and asphalt are where we live.

If the question had been "what words mean New York to New Yorkers" then I wouldn't have even posted a response.
