I just did my first swimsuit shoot actually and I think they turned out pretty well.  I was thinking about making a few of them into posters and selling them.  I looked up poster sizes and didn't find a definitive answer on like a standard size for posters... Is 20"x30" too small for a poster?   What is a typical poster size?  Specs say my camera can print up to 30"x40"     Is that too small?

Thanks,

David

I have posters that are 20" by 30", but I don't think it's a hard and fast rule. I think your main limitation is how clear the photo is and its resolution at cropped size. At 100 dpi minimum, that's 2000x3000 after cropping.

If you're selling the poster, maybe you should go for 150 dpi for better quality. That may cut down on your max size.

Call me a hack, but another consideration was matching the printed dimensions to economical-but-attractive frames. No point paying $20 for a print, but $50 more for a frame because of an oddball size.

if your using a camera with atleast 6 MP.. your fine at 20x30.. you can go larger if you want.. but it starts to degrade after 36x24 from the tests and prints i have done and seen.. alot of posters come in 36x24.. it also depends on the picture.. some can take it.. some can not.. do a test swatch at the print size cropped down to like 3"x10" and print that out.. if it looks good.. the rest of the print will look the same..

Yeah my camera specs... I use 8 MP and it says I can print up to 30 x 40.   I opened up a store and plan to start selling some posters and other merchandise online so I wanted to kinda get an idea smile    Thanks guys

You might want to think about standard poster sizes.  The standard ratio is 2x3, so think 16x24 or 24x36.  20x30 is the right ratio, too.  30x40, though nice, will make it hard to find a frame.

So here is what is being offered in my store (larger size anyway):

23 x 35

16 x 20

13 x 16 framed

Large 19 x 13 frame (14 x 10 visible)

For my camera... when I open up an image in PS, the resolution is 230 dpi.   My image size is 3264 x 2448 pixels  (8.0 MP).     Is that fine for the poster sizes 16 x 20 and 23 x 35?    Should I change the resolution higher or lower than 230?
