That's my question  ... what constitutes high fashion / glamour photography and can you show some actual examples?

Let's try to keep this an informative discussion.  No nastiness, rudeness, etc.  It's just that I see this topic coming up frequently and it seems like some sort of guideline or definition could be used.

I'm not sure I understand the question, but if you mean photography which is both "high fashion" and "glamour", the Victoria's Secret people do a good job of it.

TX, that's pretty much my question.  What constitutes high fashion or glamour?  What separates the two (they seem to be used interchangeably depending on the speaker).

There are lots of very artistic images on MM, just trying to figure out how exactly an image gets categorized.  Is there a yardstick by which things are measured or is it much more subjective?

It's highly subjective, and it changes with time.  A good deal of what is now thought of as excellent fashion photography would not have been recognized as "fashion" 30 years ago.  And many of the "rules" of fashion photography don't apply very cleanly to all of its aspects, particularly over time.  I don't think there is any way to learn the distinctions except to immerse yourself in each genre and learn what works and what does not in each.

fashion is usually about the clothes (although a fashion story can contain images that have nothing to do with the clothes).  glamour images are typically aimed at sexifying the model.  the two can cross.

Thanks TX.  As always, good advice.  As I gain more experience I figure practicing in each genre well just happen naturally.  Sometimes it's just nice to know where I'm headed.  I guess looking for a "definition" to follow at times could be a block towards finding your own style.  Although I do hope to be proficient in many areas.  :-D

Thanks Chris.  That makes sense and easy to see how the two will blend then.

High fashion and glamour are anything but interchangable.  The main purpose is what splits them.

High fashion=the feature section of W

Glamour=playboy

In fashion photography the primary goal is to advertise the work of clothing designers, no matter how obscured that goal might seem, it's the bottom line-
What gets confusing to a lot of people is that fashion is the mass appropriator...it mimics art, film, porn...you name it.

In glamour photography, the girl is the product.  The goal is to make your heart or your crotch throb, and in turn buy more magazines, subscribe to more websites, or put the poster up where your mom won't find it big_smile
