I have been contacted by a very prestigious highly known nationaly chopper builder and they want me to go with them next week to Myrtle Beach for bike week as one of their models (paid assignment).  Although I know the experience/exposure would be huge, they did contact me last minute and I have 2 TFP's booked for next weekend with some really great photographers.  Oh also, I forgot to mention that I would have to wear a thong bikini while in Myrtle Beach, which would not be a problem under the right circumstances, but I do have a feeling that there will be a lot of drunken rednecks. (never been but that's what I hear)  Do I do Myrtle Beach and reschedule my shoots (and take a chance of coming off as a flaky model) or do I stick with my shoots and not do the Bike week.  I really need advice, because I am very torn

No one will think you are flaky with this much notice. Just politely tell the TFP photographers that you have been offered a paid job and would it be ok to reschedule? I have had to do this once or twice and people are usually very nice about it as long as they have some notice. Don't sweat it.

I agree completely with claire. As for the "drunken rednecks" you can handle them, I'm sure.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but if you & I had a TFP booked, and you called a week beforehand and told me you had a good, paid opportunity, I would say definitely go for it. Paid trumps trade, especially with a week's notice.

To avoid looking like a flake, reschedule the TFP sessions at the same time.

You're on your own with the drunk rednecks though...

If possible do the bike week. It could lead to lots of paid work.  The Rednecks will not be a problem. Most will even be protective of you.

Bike Week is fun. Yes the beach is fine - bikinis  everywhere.

yes there will be drunks everywhere - that is why you go to Myrtle beach.
The cops are pretty strict about public drunkeness on the street though.

take a friend - you will have a lot of fun and drink too much!
After your posing gig - hang out with your own friends - and stay in a separate hotel if you dont want to be bothered!

If the photographers are as good as you say they are they did not get that way by being jerks. They will understand. I have had a lot of flakes and a lot of models who give notice. I never held anything against even the ones who flaked if I knew they were working with someone who I felt was better than me or if the job they took to flake on me would advance their career. I am not about to to get upset over a model doing something to move up in modeling.

I agree with everyone here. Do what will help your career. The fact that you are questioning says alot about your integrity! The photogs will most likely understand. Good luck! and congrats on being asked.

:::WARNING:  The following statement is full of lies and sarcasm:::

Please.  Paid work is way over-rated.  And what self-respecting model would want to be anywhere near a redneck wearing a thong (that didn't come out right)?  Take those TFP shoots so that you can build a book that will get you paid assignments at cool places like Myrtle Beach for a bike chopper and...

...wait.

Seriously, go to the beach.  You got into modeling so you could do work like this.  Believe me, if a very good, potentially fun paying gig was offered to those photographers during the same weekend that they've scheduled a trade with you... they'd call you and politely request to reschedule.

No reason why you can't do the same...

I had a thought about this the other day... You know it is bad when you worry that despite a ligitimate reason to cancel a shoot, you'll still be thought of as flakey.

Definately an aspect of the industry that I am not fond of...

I am torn, too.  After reading this I thought that I might go there to hang out with you in MY thong bikini.  Where I'm torn is — should I wax my back an' butt for the thong -- or jus' let my back hair flap in the breeze?

How did they contact you? Did they give you a valid call back number of the COMPANY phone? If so then you need to get the details:

How much for how many hours, overtime?
How & when will you be paid?
How are they advertising the event, if any?
Can you bring a friend or escort?

Just the normal checks and work information a pro would require.

She is absolutely correct in this. They want you to be their eye candy and they know you're a pro not some biker's trashy woman, although I've found most of them are great people and beautifully respectful ladies in their own right.

You'd have a good time, stories to tell and some great exposure.  The worst that is likely to happen is some guy might smack your butt once or twice trying to get playful and I'm sure you've handled guys like that before being in the modeling game.  Just tell them to f@#k off and keep on working, you'll be great.

Rock on...

I wouldn't worry too much about the 'drunken rednecks' as you say.  I've been to a few events here in Daytona Beach, and also been to Myrtle Beach.  If you're going to be with a bike builder, and not in a beer tub, you shouldn't get hassled as much as you might think.  It's a great way to make a few contacts, too.

I think you would be giving plenty of notice to reschedule a TFP shoot.  And, it's for a paid gig!  So, as a photographer, I can say I would understand, just as I would expect a model to understand if I picked up a paid shoot which conflicted with their TFP shoot.

Good luck and enjoy Myrtle Beach! smile

So I'm curious.  If the TFP photographers say that they can't reschedule, do you tell them sorry, its a paid gig and I'm doing it.?

Professionally, paid gigs do (generally) come first and no one ought to think badly of you for that - if you give notice and DO reschedule!

Have fun!

But yea, funnily enough when it comes to biker events I have had many female biker friends tell me they never felt more safe parading around in their thongs and chaps, or less than when they were at a big rowdy fun biker event. They can walk around anywhere and not be bugged. Think about it, big burly jim bob biker dude with the ZZ top look walkin along side her or standing by her might be her man. Are you gonna risk a beating by him , and whoever else feels like jumping in,for a feel? Not.This is also why so may Bikers at these events feel safe leaving keys in the bikes ignition while they go drink at these events, or leave custom painted helmets hangin on the handlebars. That bike could belong to anyone there. It might not be left alone like you think.

And yea, feel free to tell anyone who you THINK might get rowdy to back the fuck off at the top of your lungs if need be.One, it will get the attention of guys who don`t take kindly to guys botherin a girl. Two, others who might have the same thing in the back of their mind will now stay they hell back.

You guys are so funny!  I have no doubt in my mind that I will be taken care of and will be safe.  As far as getting my ass smacked a couple of times.  I know...it comes with the job.  I was doing my Miller Genuine Draft promotion last night, and I got my ass smacked.  (and I was fully clothed in a pretty conservative outfit if I may add)  You just sort of laugh it off and move on.  But you're right....if I have some big burly biker dude watching my back I doubt that anyone will want to mess with me.  You guys are awesome!  I am actually really excited about this now, and hopefully I'll have some great stories to tell upon my return.  The plan is to go down Wed night and return on Sunday.

PS....all prayers for my safe return are welcomed and highly appreciated hahaha
