Does anyone have any useful tips on preventing your ideas from being stolen? How do you discuss ideas with people without having them steal them,, and then exclude you in the production? This has NOT happened to me yet but, the thought has crossed my mind and welcome everyone's constructive input,,thanks! Chill Apr 19 05 03:55 pm Link Two forms... 1. Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) 2. Non-Compete Agreement (time limitation...1 to x years?) That'll be $5 per each advise line item. I accept PayPal. Next in line! (wink wink) Lol. Apr 19 05 04:03 pm Link Posted by Joe K. Perez: Apr 19 05 04:06 pm Link I think that if you sealed your self in a block of plastic 8 feet by 3 feet your ideas would be safe...otherwise you cant trust anybody with your own thoughts Hugh Apr 19 05 04:07 pm Link Posted by Hugh Jorgen: My sentiments exactly, Hugh. Um how do you even put a creative idea on the table without someone just walking away with it? Contracts, written agreements etc are only as good as the person who agrees NOT to steal your idea. Apr 19 05 04:11 pm Link If everybody thinks you're a kook, they will just ignore your ideas! Oh, wait, that's no good. Um, yeah, just go with Hugh's idea. Polyester resin and maybe you can ecase your ideas in carbon fiber gauze first. Apr 19 05 05:48 pm Link Posted by Brian Kim: Um ok is that a useful method for you? Or? Apr 19 05 05:52 pm Link Three quotes I try to live by: Three people can effectively keep a secret, as long as two of them are dead. Presume that everything you say, to anyone, will be heard, by everyone. Never trust a naked bus driver. Apr 19 05 06:04 pm Link In regards to anyone making art; amateurs borrow, professionals steal. Your s*** will never be safe. So just beat everyone else to it. How many bad LaChappelle bites have you seen on this sight so far? Cause there's a bunch... Your idea will be stolen - so just make sure you pull it off well and set the bar super-high for all the fakers. Apr 19 05 06:45 pm Link These agreements are the legal way but actually a contract written up will suffice and hold up in court. Then again it depends on your idea. For example on the internet people steal web copy and there is not too much you can do about that unless you want to lose your rank in listings. I complained to Goggle about porno websites mis-using my name rikdaren and people have used robot tv girl in a context that invades my listings..turns out they lowered my rank. This is because there is corruption everywhere on the web. I hate to say this but the porn industry controls the web in some cases. They rank side by side with Google and Yahoo the two big corporate internet giants. So when it comes to things on the web all you can do is be better then the next person. Check any of my listings like rik daren or robot tv girl. You will see pages using my words or copy but they are in no way linked to me. Like anything in life you should and must have a contract for anything to hold up in court. Registering a trademark such as your name is a good idea or using your idea in a name as a .com address.-Rik Daren for Robot Tv Girl. Apr 19 05 06:53 pm Link Posted by Blacklist Visual: Yup this is good,,now we are getting somewhere! Apr 19 05 07:00 pm Link Posted by Robot Tv Girl: Also good sound advice ,,THANKS! Apr 19 05 07:01 pm Link Posted by Joe K. Perez: Hey Joe, do you have examples of those agreements you can share? Apr 19 05 07:01 pm Link Posted by Christopher Ambler: Very good! Apr 19 05 07:02 pm Link I do agree that you can't stop anyone from stealing your creative idea. I made a business proposal to a bellydance teacher, she turned me down, and then approached my assistant (also a photographer but the bellydancer didn't know she was my assistant) with the very same idea....cutting me right out of the business deal. Needless to say, my assistant came directly to me, and said bellydancer never got her deal, with me or with anyone else here. Apr 19 05 07:05 pm Link Posted by Aperture Photographics: Apr 19 05 07:07 pm Link Before I say anything else, let me say this... there is NOTHING I can shoot that hasn't been shot already. It's all been done. BUT. If I've got an idea that I wan't to shoot and I really dig it, I don't tell ANYBODY. Not even my girl. I'll tell people the basics of it, but only enough of the vitals to get the elements together. Beyond that, I just tell people to look at my work, and if they think I can pull it off, to trust me with the details. Apr 19 05 07:30 pm Link I have a similiar problem. I think of a great idea, keep them to myself and then some time later they are used in a book, movie, comercial, ad or photo. Someone is reading my mind. Example, Many years ago I thought of a story/book where the main character injured in a accident had muscles reattached to his bones in slightly different places than where they should be. This gave him extraordinary strength. Think of how Chimps are stronger than we are pound for pound. It's where the muscles attach. Now I just read that baseball players are having similiar surgery to increase the speed they pitch a ball. I should have written that story. Apr 19 05 11:35 pm Link Posted by Chill Factor: As an all-around artist myself, I also wonder about this nightmarish possibility... The only way to not have it happen is to not have any original ideas.... No thinking allowed. Or... heh heh heh... I have my second course of action where I send my cousin "Guido" to relay the message that "Copying is bad... very very bad..." and restitution must be paid in the form of broken body parts... We prefer the knees - but will accept elbows if all out of knees. Apr 20 05 12:25 pm Link Posted by Christopher Ambler: Cathryn loves naked bus drivers Apr 20 05 01:01 pm Link When you say naked - do socks count? Apr 20 05 01:07 pm Link man i gotta stop blabbing away about my stuff at local bars... Posted by Blacklist Visual: Apr 20 05 01:18 pm Link Posted by Reese: Posted by Chill Factor: I guess there really is no easy answer for this one,,or quite possibly no answer? LOL Apr 21 05 01:37 pm Link Not sure. Nov 25 05 10:04 pm Link Hmmmmmm. I've had that question myself. I suppose just try and share your ideas with only the people you personally trust or those you feel will be willing to help out with the ideas. Nov 25 05 10:08 pm Link as a former director of several major blockbuster movies, i can assure you, here in hollywood, there is nothing new under the sun...its all been done before. Nov 25 05 10:21 pm Link Try being non-descript when expressing your ideas. Speak using vague terms and open-ended sentences. Let them complete your lead in and use their idea if it's better. (jk here, kinda) You can describe filling a swimming pool with jell-o without telling whom your talking to any specifics. Like the pool is a kiddy wading pool and the jell-o is a certain color or you plan on using Jell-o pudding (insert B. Cosby face here). And the number of models could range from 1-100 in varying ages, shapes, hairstyles etc. Nov 25 05 10:22 pm Link BlacklistVisual wrote: Damn! Here I was, thinking no one had photographed nude Chinese midgets bowling with balls covered with florescent feathers, while kilt-wearing Scotsmen watched from atop albino ostriches they were riding in the next lane, all while several robotic lasers paint pornographic patterns on everything in sight! I honestly thought that shot was going to be so original! Nov 25 05 10:35 pm Link Chill Factor wrote: From my perspective you have the cart before the horse... why worry about something that hasn't happened to you. Go forth and create... and develop good business habits along the way. You'll be fine. Nov 25 05 10:54 pm Link ive had ideas that ive discussed with others 'stolen', and im not talking about a conceptual "what do you think of a shoot featuring midget models and a toy plane, i mean someone taking my entire idea, down to the exact location, props, clothing, and even the same models and trying to shoot it before me, and then to make it worst, they've acted like they did nothing wrong next time they saw me so now i do not discuss very much beforehand, i just say im going to have shoot, and people decide then to schedule to show up or not. a few days before the shoot, after they've sign work agreements, they get to see a story board, and find out the details, location, designer, props etc Nov 26 05 07:43 pm Link I emailed a designer a bunch of drawings I came up with to match his designs for an editorial. They were face paintings that were very unique....He didnt finish the designs on time and called off the shoot the day before.....I will bet you my last penny that his models will have those face designs in an upcoming show of his designs. I just hope and pray that he will hire some budget $200.00 a day artist that can't re create what I did in the drawing. Many of the stuff I have done in the past that I thought was original is now all over the place...Was I first? I can't prove it and I honestly don't know. Have I copied other peoples stuff I have seen? haven't we all? thats what fashion is all about, we copy, we put our own twist and flavour to an idea, but just about everything has been done somewhere by someone. Nov 26 05 11:28 pm Link Write your idea down, with samples if possible. Post it to yourself or someone you trust 100% by registered post. When it is delivered do not open it. That way you have proof of the date of your idea if it ever gets to court. The package can then be opened by the judge.
