3. Something, such as a material object or a nonsexual part of the body, that arouses sexual desire and may become necessary for sexual gratification.
4. An abnormally obsessive preoccupation or attachment; a fixation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fashion

The term fashion applies to a prevailing mode of expression. Inherent in the term is the idea that the mode will change more quickly than the culture as a whole. The terms "fashionable" and "unfashionable" are employed to describe whether someone or something fits in with the currently popular mode of expression. The term "fashion" is often used in a negative sense, as a synonym for fads and trends. In this sense, fashions are essentially a relief from boredom, or a distraction from important matters, for the idle rich. The term is also frequently used in a positive sense, as a synonym for glamour and style. In this sense, fashions are a sort of communal art, through which a culture examines its notions of beauty and goodness.

Fashions are social psychology phenomena common to many fields of human activity and thinking. The rises and falls of fashions have been especially documented and examined in the following fields:

[...]# Body type, clothing or costume, cosmetics, grooming, and personal adornment[...]

Is fashion not an obsession? A fixation? Tied to sexuality?

So is it a fetish or, if not, what is it?

I think it is; it's like with some animals. They express their brightest colors in order to attract a mate. Humans find their colors in fashion. And spring=brighter colors because it's mating season or something. Lol - plus, why else would we have lingerie and find it sexy?

Sure, anything is anything according to American Heritage.  They have few word curmudgeons working for them.

I believe fashion can be fetish-ized (and often is) - just like anything else.

If you don't believe fashion is a fetish, look at Avedon.  More and more I'm coming to view him as the world's most famous perv/fetishist.  I keep finding stuff that my colleagues and myself do today that he did 50 years ago.

Have someone who only does fashion, assist you, while you're doing fetish stuff,
and you will see who is the real pervert wink

I think fashion photography is a vortex that sucks everything in the world into itself to turn out artifacts that delight, distract, entertain, and influence its afficianados.  Is it all about sex?  Well, what isn't?  Lol.  Whatever it's about, most of the time, it's about young women and men set up in front of seamless (leaf through any given W).  All of the rest, Calvin to Guess Marciano play on icons and myths, from hip Lolita's to broken dolls, the next Brando's to the latest reconfiguration of the classic libertine, and much of all of that is provocative, which is why we like it.

So what makes fetish not fashion? Why is it another category?

The main purpose of "fetish" is sexual gratification.  The main purpose of "fashion" is to move merchandise.

That's the industry, I mean the act of taking pictures. What says "this is a fashion shot and that is a fetish shot" and why? Don't alot of fetish pictures get taken to sell black leather garments?

I mean the act of taking pictures.

I like what Bonnie Raitt told Oprah and audience one afternoon after playing her guitar and singing a song on her show: "It feels as good as it sounds."
