Hiyya everyones , I have not seen this topic anywhhere but appologise if it's here somewheere and I missed it .

I would love to know what defines your personal style . For example , as a model , what sort of  fashions styles are  you  at  " home " in ?

As a photographer , what sort of style do you like to photograph if it's fashion related ?

What sort pf places do you all like to shop in ?

Me , I love to wear punk or goth style cloths but I also LOVE wearing very colorfull clothes to  as long as they are not trendy  and I refuse to shop in any chain stores . I LOVE to shop in used clothing stores , vintage  clothing stores and stuff likke that .  I guess in a way , I am the anti fashion gurl .

Actually most of my kind have to wear stupid sweaters in the winter or else they will freeze their balls off.

I am the dang rebel dog for I could care less,  for Jack will not wear off the rack.

Plus I had a descended testicle so they cut my balls off,  so I cannot freeze my balls off even if I got that cold feeling like you get from your girlfriend.

Honestly I couldn't give a damn. Whatever a photographer wants me to wear I will wear. I guess that kinda makes me sound like a whore but thats what modeling is about. You get paid to look good in something you are told to wear. At least thats if you want to make money. It doesn't matter if you like it, as long as you look good in it. Normaly I don't wear a "goth" or "punk" uniform. I see fashion as nothing more than vainity. And sorry to burst anyones bubble but goth and punk are nothing more than trends created by places like "gap-topic". I shop at thrift stores because I'ld rather spend money on food, rent, and college than clothes.

I concur with Leila... but a photographer's style when it comes to his or her work, is one of the first things I look at - not what they're wearing when they're shooting, the personal style of their finished photos...

I did a shoot once where the head honcho pulled me aside to tell me they loved my vibe but wanted to try something else... The shoot was in kinda preppy clothes, so they told me to put on what i showed up in, which was jeans, suspenders, & a beater... Those shots came out so much better b'cos it was more me... I shop at thrift stores & little chunty stores in the ghetto... or if i can't find the rite thing for where i'm going, i sit down with my sewing machine...

My style is all over the place and I'm different then the majority of you.I CARE ABOUT WHAT I WEAR,rather it be in a shoot or just hanging out w/ friends or even just going to the grocery store.I look good for myself not what others think.I think as a woman you should look good for yourself first&foremost not for others.it's not vain it's just taking pride in being a woman.
even My t-shirts and jeans have to be what I myself deem stylish.
I shop everywhere from thrift shops to chain stores to the mall to designer clothes to clothes I get from clothing companies for modeling for them to online stores to catalogues to clothing companies who create custom clothing for Me(like devine designs.I tell her what I want and she creates it for Me).I don't care where I get My clothes as long as I like them I could give a shit less about what store or what the damn brand is.I'm a complete clothes whore.*lol* as long as I like it and I think it looks good on Me that's all that matters.

I have a style but I try not to define it too much.

What I mean is, if you look at my photos, you can see a consistent use of line and color and exposure that gives my photos my "look" to them.

But I try not to label what that look is.

Someday, people can just say, "Oh! Clearly this piece is the work of the great Muss-Barnes."

Unfortunetly pop culture has destroyed the meaning and origin of the word punk. I don't know if goth ever had another meaning except to refer to kids who wear black and thing they can talk to the devil.

That's consumer culture. These days, every form of rebellion gets commercialized within a week.

Pop had nothing to do with destroying punk, punks destroyed punk. I shop at Hot Topic, The Gap, etc...who cares? As long as you wear what youre wearing WELL, thats all that matters. Its annoying hearing people bash chains and brag about how they 'thrift' it. That isnt punk or goth or prep, thats just cheap (and 9/10 times it shows).

BTW, that comment about goths thinking they can talk to the devil is just, well...stupid and uneducated. Goth has been around a heck of a lot longer than punk, and actually described a movement or some say a religion all its own. Do you even know what punk is or how it came about? It was started in England by those who wanted to get government money, by altering their appearance in a way that was not acceptable by employers or schools. Thats a summary of it. Do some research.

Punk in America was based on the blue collar, lower income families. A rebellion is what it became, but only fashion wise.

Anyways...back to the topic. I am who I am. Hot Topic, Salvation Army, or naked. It doesnt matter to me, because whatever I wear, I wear well. Clothing doesnt make a person.

Good for you. You get a cookie.

Well if its braging to say that I buy cheap shit so I can afford to go to graduate school then I guess I'm braging.

I was refering to the popular sterotype. It was saposed to be wrong to show the distortion that pop culture has created.

Do you even know what punk is or how it came about? It was started in England by those who wanted to get government money, by altering their appearance in a way that was not acceptable by employers or schools. Thats a summary of it. Do some research.

Sorry hun, my research is in the field of human sexuality and reproduction. I don't think anyone would get a grant to research pop culture. And by the way, thats a pretty narrow summary.

Punk in America was based on the blue collar, lower income families. A rebellion is what it became, but only fashion wise.

Yes and hippies did nothing but smoke pot.

Anyways...back to the topic. I am who I am. Hot Topic, Salvation Army, or naked. It doesnt matter to me, because whatever I wear, I wear well. Clothing doesnt make a person.

Then why are you making such a big deal about it?

Ummm...was that saposed to be an answer to my question? Why did you have a post making such a big deal about where you will shop and the origin of tearms that in our culture have been distorted into nothing more than fashion references just to end it by saying its not important? For something not important to you, you seem very passionate about it. I'm just curious to see why someone would get so defensive about something that they claim isn't important to them.

I can't say that have a preffence for any particular fashion style when I'm shooting, just as long as it fits the models form and style.

now as far as personal style I follow 2 rules.

1) must protect protect me from the enviroment.
2) they have to protect me from public embarassment by covering the nessary body parts.

anything else is just extra. but I guess I'm not the one infront of the camera. lol

As a photographer I only shoot fetish, rubber fetish that is, mainly because i like the look of it and the sensuous way it moulds itself to the models body. To me a tight fitting catsuit on a girl is more erotic than if she were naked.

Personally I prefer a pair of jeans and a tshirt look, never been a follower of trends or fashion, although i did do the grunge look at uni cos it was cheap and required no real effort on my part. I did do a shoot dressed in fetish gear but that's a another story.

When I said it doesnt matter to me, I was talking about my own clothing and what I personally wear, because I was emphasizing that no matter where you shop, its HOW you wear it that makes an impression. It had nothing to do with the history of punk or goth, which is why I said I was getting back on the topic of the thread right before that. Im nowhere near defensive;]

Rubber and latex always look cool in photos. Honestly, I just love the feel of latex, wearing it just makes you feel sexy.

I think the point was that they didn't like that someone who has obviously zero knowledge of some 40 years of alternative culture was making a blanket statement dismissing it.

AHHHHHH!!!!!! Read my original post!
I said nothing about alternative culture. All I said was that society has taken these tearms and changed any actual meaning behind them and turned them into fashion references. Punk used to be a subculture, now you can buy pre-ripped clothes at places like hot topic. People now refer to someone as a goth simply if they wear black. Most people don't have a clue about the origins of these words and they have gone from describing a culture into describing a fashion trend.
Please read someones post before making a comment on it!

I call my personal style Bohemian Sexpot.

I do shop vintage a lot. Not only do you save a lot of money and find things no one else has, but you often get to support a good cause at the same time, if you shop Sally Ann or Goodwill or one of the Humane Society thrift stores.

There's also the added benefit of knowing you've not supported any sweatshops. That's also the reason I buy a lot of basics from American Apparel. They may not be perfect, but they employ people in the US and pay fair, livable wages. I won't get on my soapbox about that as it is a tender subject in some circles. Local designers are good for that too, not that I can usually afford them!

I have a nice assortment of baby Ts and tanks with pro-animal rights slogans on them, which as an activist, is very important. I have lots of stuff that just have that 60s vibe. I have some really great 1960s frocks and flowy skirts and sundresses. I like flared jeans over straight-legged. I figure, we have to wear clothes anyway, we may as well wear clothes that look good on us and reflect who we are.

Oddly enough, I also like formalwear. Pity no one throws formal parties anymore.

I'd have to say that models have a "look" whereas photogrpahers have a "style".

Since models pose according to the photographer's direction (99% of the time?) they have to have a bunch of "styles" but, it's their look that remains the same (except for a makeup artist's artistry).

A photographer, on the other hand shoots the way he "sees" the shot in his mind (or heart, if you want to romanticize it). That is very hard for a photographer to change...the way he or she "sees". And, in return, his/her "style" comes out in all his/her images (cars, landscapes, models, etc).

Of course, this comparison and .55 will get me a cup of java at Micky D's.
