People -

There are things in the English language called commas, periods, quotes, etc.

Look them up and start using them.

I guess people think grammar dosn't really matter on the INTERNET. As long as people reading understands what is being said, then cool.

lol, I KNOW what you're talking about.

But that's a problem that only proper schooling can correct.... It's too late, dude.

Anyone want a "Hooked On Phonics" tape?

While on the topic of being pedantic, folks should also know that the following words are NOT interchangeable synonyms:

"to" and "too" and "two"

"there" and "their" and "they're"

"your" and "you're"

"weather" and "whether"

"except" and "accept"

"which" and "witch"

"affect" and "effect"

"through" and "threw"

"role" and "roll"

"soul" and "sole"

"pole" and "poll"

"who's" and "whose"

"no" and "know"

"aloud" and "allowed"

Eric,

Then and than are often used incorrectly.  I also see "payed" often--as in "I'm only excepting payed assignments at this time."

Agreed.

Do you think it's a good idea to make it harder for everyone else to understand, though?

I joke constantly, but let me give a serious answer for a moment.

You say as long as the reader understands what is being said, that is cool. Okay. Fine.

And that is EXACTLY why rules of grammar and spelling are important. Maintaining a consistent set of rules for the way languages are written and spoken is important so that communication IS accurate and understood.

Inaccurate communication can lead to disasters. Misunderstandings can be catastrophic.

For those who replace the possession of grammatical knowledge with a flippant, lackadaisical apathy and think, "Who cares? What difference does it make?" I can tell you in three words - Mars Climate Orbiter. That is the $125 million spacecraft that was lost by NASA engineers on 23 September 1999 because some numbnuts confused metric and non-metric measurements in programming the maneuvering system. Inaccurate communications can produce dire consequences.

To quote Mark Twain, "The difference between the right word and almost-the-right-word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug."

I've had models email me before, and I deleted  their
emails solely based on poor grammar and atrocious spelling. I figure if they couldn't be responsible enough to learn even the basics in high school, I probably don't want them in my studio.

Amen, brother.

When someone sends a message full of misspellings, bad grammar and typos, it says something.  Even *I* try to type in intelligible English so less people accuse me of being a moron.

It doesn't work, but I try.

To hell with Yoda.

He is like the force,  he will be back,  somewhere somehow,  we do not know,  but he will appear again somewhere.

I only hope he can channel his energy into the positive side of the force.

I am quite serious.
