I met with a model a couple weeks ago at a coffee shop.  I didn't know what she wanted when I met with her.  She explained that she wanted to submit to playboy.  I tried to discourage her because frankly, I didn't see her in playboy.  She insisted she wanted to try.  I told her I could get her better shots than she had so we scheduled a shoot.

To make a long story short, the wife didn't want me to do it so I called her back and told her I'd go as far as Maxim style.  Then I call back to confirm the time and she canceled because she wanted nudes.

She was respectful in the way she canceled.  She didn't cost me any money because it was canceled enough ahead of time that nobody was out any time or money.  And, I do get that I was the one that changed the terms of the shoot.

I'm just kind of bummed because for all the photographers out their trying to get models out of their clothes, I was trying to keep her in hers and didn't get the shoot because of it.

I just have this bad vision of her bouncing around between bad photogs that are happy to shoot with her because she wants nudes.  Wife says, too bad, that's her problem and that she's a big girl and can make her own decisions.  I did tell her not to sign an unrestricted release for TFP.  Hopefully she'll listen to that.

Anyways, comments?

It makes sense to me that she cancelled if you couldn't shoot what she wanted.  Not knowing this model it's hard to judge if she has the common sense to work with good photogs and read the releases first though.

Your wife told you not to shoot  what the model wanted ?

I don't think it's your problem to worry about what photographer the model finds to do her shoot. I'd worry about someone else telling me what I could shoot.

Alan,

No, I wasn't burned.  In this case, I changed the shoot so if anything I flaked on her.  I guess there's a part of me that's bummed about that.

She told me during our last conversation that she's got an agent.   That could mean a lot of things but hopefully it means she's got someone pointing her to good photographers and looking after her as she persues her goal.

Sounds like a happy story. You stuck to your principles (no judgement made there). She had a clear idea of what she wanted and cancelled in good time. A very professional outcome.

We all have to turn something down once in a while (with me it's usually Weddings). smile

I've been married for 17 years.  If I didn't want to give the wife veto power I would have just gone and done the shoot and not spoken with her about it.  So in the end, I chose to honor my wife's wishes.  To me, that give and take is part of a good relationship.   That relationship is certainly more important to me then shooting a model for submission to playboy.  Who knows, I may come across a model that I feel truely has the potential to make it.  Maybe then, it's worth pushing back.  It wasn't in this case.  You're right though, it isn't really my business what other photographer she works with.

Nobody ever said you had to shoot everything that was offered to you.  You might be taking the extreme prediction that she'll bounce around between photographers who want to get her nekkid, but it's an understandable assumption.  As someone mentioned, you stuck to your principles.  Sure, you changed the terms, but at least you notified her in advance as opposed to refusing to shoot her nude the day of...

But what an interesting twist of irony that would've been!  Photographer decides not to do nudes the day of the shoot sending the model to the message boards to complain about bait-&-switch you pulled.

Bummer!  It is rather ironic that there are threads/complaints on her all the time that there are so many photographers just trying to get the model to pose nekkid...then you refuse to shoot nudes and get turned down.

I applaud you for doing what you think is right, and feel you pain in not getting to shoot what you wanted to.

Sorry to waste 10 seconds of your time.  90% of forum material is crap.  Next time I'll post something truely unique like "what's porn?" or "model was a no show" because those haven't been done yet.

She wanted nudes.  You couldnt deliver. She cancelled.  No controversy there.

What I found more interesting is that you didnt shoot the model cause your wife said you couldnt.  Hmmm.

UNTIL THIS STATEMENT, i didn't have a problem with what happened.  you respected your wifes wishes , only because you didn't feel she had a chance.  we business people, she liked your work enough to come to you for a service and because u felt she wasn't adequate u allowed your wife to talk you aou of it. that i don't agree with.  flip the script, what if her husband thought you weren't adequate to take the pix.  i don't think you were fair with the young lady

if your wife doesn't want you to shoot nudes, you should have known that before the meeting.  therefore there would not have been a need to cancel and date that would not have been placed

Picture me has some great insight here..

to the OP:  all's well that ends well here basically.. you didnt really want to shoot this gal nekkid and your wife's 'veto power' confirmed that... model was right to cancel as you werent doing what she wanted... dont see what the hubub is about with model canceling...

my curious observation is with the 'veto power' thing.. lol.... if you could only read your own words and see how ridiculous they sound... a grown adult professional having to get 'permission' to shoot a model ...  if you truly have a good 'relationship' ... no permission slip would be needed as your partner would have adultlike trust in your adult professional judgement and not be absorbed in her own insecurities... tsk tsk.. time to grow some hair down there bud.. smile  but hey .. if your happy with it...

this situation you have is almost analogous to the jealous boyfriend who wont let his model girlfriend shoot any nudies with photogs .. hmmm ... isnt that a wonderful 'relationship' smile

smile if you can get permission to reply,  please do smile

Your committment to your marrage needs to be praised here,  Bravo!

AS to the shoot, she contacted you for a specific purpose, you were not able to fulfill her need for the type of imagery she wanted.  She therefore declined to shoot with you because she had specific requirments for the shoot.  No harm, no foul.

I don't mean to sound like a smart arse..but if she wants to submit to a nude mag..she has to be shot nude.  I kinda see her point.

Sounds like you got what you wanted...she gets to go get what she wants. Noone lost time nor money.  I don't see why you are bummed.

And what makes you think she has to go to a bad photographer to get what she wants?
There are other (yes, I think your work is pretty good) good photographers out there for her to choose from.
