Guys,

I see we had the discussion about John Casablancas, but my question is "What the deal with craigs list"? Has anyone ever received a call back that actually led to a paid job? Or is this a scam? And exactly who is Craig? Somebody tell me what's up?

I've had success with craigslist.  You just have to make sure and exchange a lot of emails, check out their website, etc and if you have any kind of feeling that it's not legit, don't do it.

craigslist is a community board - anything goes!
so you have to use the braincells to determine if offers are legit.

As a photographer, I have gotten jobs from Craigslist!
I have sold equipment on Craigslist
I have bought monitors form ads on Craigslist.

keep in mind these puchases have all been LOCAL!
by the time you read this the Nigerian 419s will have found it!

I use the rant and rave  section to say the %$$#@ things I cant say on the MM forum.

I get 99.9% of my yoga clients off Craigslist.  Some decent paying art modeling jobs.
Like anywhere else, you have to check them thoroughly.

Craig's List is amazing.  You can buy used bicycles or find freaky sex (or so I have been told, not tried THAT exactly).  It does have the advantage that it is city based, so you go to that city's page and you know people are reasonably close by.  I have found models on CL.  But I do art photography so I am looking more for students who are interested in my work than full-time fashion models.  Still, it can't hurt to check it out if you live in a large city.

I have used CL before but for the most part it's a bunch of porn people who probably bought a cam yesterday and have nothing better to do....sounds like many on MM HAHA!! No seriously you may find something there but I would be cautious like anything on the net.

I love craigslist! Be wary of some of the castings, but some of it is legit.

I've had virtually no luck at all using Craigslist for anything. I've applied to jobs there and not heard a thing back, I've posted my own photography and assisting services there with no response, I've tried selling stuff and got email from a-holes from Nigeria (really). So, I have very little use for it personally.

I found an awesome apartment on Craigs list.  I've sold things on there and bought furniture there.  It's a great community bulletin board.  Buyer beware though.  I've also hired an incredible music composer, a couple of film cameramen for a documentary and had a few job interviews with legit companies.  Just do your homework.  Never, never send money to anyone for anything.  Deal locally.

I've found it to be a haven for low-ball crap and slack personalities. Wouldn't touch C.L. OR MySpace.

I've never used Craig's, but I met a model tonight who met two very good photographers on Craigs and we're shooting next week.  While I can't speak about Craigslist, I can say the model has huge potential. /tim

I've been using CL lately.  The rate of return for my time sifting through the ads had been very, very low.  A lot of the posts are just guys looking to get models to send them photos.  Many of of the art nude ads are really porn when you get down to it.  Really, it's an insane amount of crap with very few gems.

A wiser model would give up on CL, but I have to go meet someone from CL for coffee right now.  Perhaps I really *am* an optomist.

The craigslist community personality also varies WIDELY from city to city (site sub section to site subsection).  I've had lots of success with dealing with craigslisters in Philadelphia, but almost none when dealing with craigslisters in New Jersey.  New York craigslist is a combination of scam artists, real people, and wannabes.

Pretty much CL is like life in the areas that it serves.

I got my full time job from a listing on craigslist.

Most of the other photography related stuff has been:  I post my rates, I only get emails asking me to do stuff for free.

Lots and lots of boneheads use craigslist.  If you are going to post an ad, be prepared to wade through a ton of junk mail from morons before finding something useful.

Craig is just a guy who started an ad website. I don`t agree with some of the posting rules but I deal. I have found some really cool models through the site, including my best inked model who at the time was a Suicide Girl about 3-4 years back before all the stuff about SG started to surface.

Tons of photographs and models use CL. Especially in the artist section and gig/talent sections. I do not see it as a scam. How could it be, it is just a site of people posting ads.

I've only had luck with CL on the west coast (and agree with Mr. Jackson that it does vary by location). Are there any similar sites for other markets like Miami? (Yes I know CL has a Miami section)

My luck has been good though I mimic Theda's sentiments... I found my roommates, first apartment in LA (not where I live now that was a gem thus not on CL wink and some furnishings. Sold a LSAT study guide package... I haven't had any luck in the past six months though

There is a lot of crap and unfortunately a lot of it is not obvious. They recently added an adult section for the gigs but there seems to be some confusion about which postings belong there. Problems:
- the pay tends to be low, like expecting a CPA to work for $12/hr - illegal immigrants make on average $10/hr. Worse still are the ones who aren't upfront about compensation - so you don't find out until you're at the meeting, "Oh yeah sorry I made that years ago - before I graduated high school - or could drive".  If I come across opportunities for photographers / MUA / stylist I like to pass them on, but I've been passing on anything that would come across as a slap in the face (um, don't think I'll send this one, I'd like them to still talk to me tongue)
- the community has some hyper sensitive members with the power to flag, which results in postings that are sparse (and usually vague) - like the message boards on OMP wink
- photo collectors, after the first email it's pretty clear what's up
- asking for phone numbers, some might be legit but not at the cost of those that are not. There are postings about those postings ("They're just collecting phone numbers of hot chicks")
- postings for casting calls that are really "I just want hot chicks at my party" or "I just want to be seen with hot chicks"
- my personal pet peeve: the hundreds (yes hundreds) of postings for testing / TFP / TFCD that don't include a link or sample of their work

Like everything else CL has its uses.  I've sold stuff on there before and given away junk that was cluttering up my house (I loathe clutter).  The personals section is always good for a laugh which my wife browses during the day as I really don't usually have time for that between 4:45 am and 5:00 pm.  But like the rest of the net there are fruits, flakes, and nuts, in abundance.  So I'd be wary of anybody I dealt with online until I had the chance to thoroughly check them out and was 100% sure of who I was making arrangements with.  Fakers and pervs are not in short supply anywhere online.

Um, if you go into the adult section, yea. But there is much more to CL than the adult section.

I am really surprised. I see girls on there all the time who would love to do the kind of work you do, especially with as nice as your work is. Which section are you looking in?

Be CAREFUL with craigslist.

There may be some legitimate jobs on there, and I set up a TFP shoot awhile ago, which went quite well. However, I've also had a horrible experience trying to find a receptionist job (innocent enough right). Long story short it wasn't an ''interview''. He was arrested.
