Should MM be selective about it's members?
Lately I have noticed that a lot of junk has been floating on MM, and that is my opinion...I know that this is suppose to be a site for professionals in this industry, but somehow "Junk", yes I said it junk seems to be on here proudly...I am one for creativity and expression, but to me I see some nudes looking like straight sleeze porn with no concept, self taken images of torso's and body parts and other stuff with phone camera's- that just would not be accecptable...I know that everyone has to have a start, some things on here are just totally not professional...Maybe it is just me and the good out weighs the bad on here, but the bad just makes more bad come.... Mar 12 06 11:02 pm Link I don't know... I think it's too late. I mean -- they let me in! Do'h! Mar 12 06 11:02 pm Link Pat Thielen wrote: LOL, you don't count as bad. Mar 12 06 11:04 pm Link MM is selective about whom it lets in. You should see the garbage that gets denied. Mar 12 06 11:11 pm Link No. This is also just another version of an age-old rant that boils down to "Let's exclude anyone who's work isn't up to my standards." MM has standards. They're not perfect, but they work pretty well. Focus on improving your own work instead of excluding those who haven't gained your level yet, and you'll never have to worry about them at all. Mar 12 06 11:11 pm Link I say; Toss Bridgit NOW! Mar 12 06 11:13 pm Link Yea, throw out the trash. Mar 12 06 11:13 pm Link This is not a professional website. This is a networking website on which some professionals network and some amateurs network. What they have in common is that they have all demonstrated a sincere desire to pursue work in the field of photography, modeling, hair styling, makeup, or wardrobe styling. Mar 12 06 11:15 pm Link Tim Hammond wrote: I did not say anything about anyone being perfect or on "MY Level", lately I have seen some stuff on here that I personally think is junk, as you probably think sometimes too, you might think my stuff is junk... and you can focus on improving your own work as well. Mar 12 06 11:16 pm Link YES, provided I get to choose the members. Otherwise, no. Totally undoable. The closest MM will ever get to choosing members is when they start charging and all the good photographers (who don't have to be here) leave. -Don Mar 12 06 11:17 pm Link i agree, half the people on here shouldnt even be allowed to view this site. half the garbage on here is "trash" and MM should denie half the people on this site. including Mr. Hammond who feels that its ok that billybob puts up his pics taken by a polorid down in ol gran papi's ranch and actually be able to call himself a model. its pathetic.. Mar 12 06 11:18 pm Link UnoMundo Photography wrote: You know you feel the same at times, so I guess we will both be tossed... Mar 12 06 11:19 pm Link well... the homepage says this site is supposed to have a "myspace or friendster" feel to it. you wouldn't have myspace without junk. i guess it goes with the territory. I simply meant that anyone who focuses more effort on improving than on filtering out the junk will probably never have to worry about the junk. Mar 12 06 11:21 pm Link UnoMundo Photography wrote: ring toss. Mar 12 06 11:23 pm Link I believe that the beginners should be given a chance and shouldn't be turned down just because they are learning. And those who are experienced by now, shouldn't forget that there was a time when they were just starting out and their work just plain sucked. Mar 12 06 11:24 pm Link with that untouchables card of yours if you had joined to the forum I am a moderator of we wouldnt ban you. we would help you how to make it look better...even using the same font and idea. you may be a master in one area but that doesnt mean you have flaws. MM is already selective. the only limitation we have is age which is 13+ and we check your posts to see if you are a nice person or not. but if you are trying you are welcome all the way. so will you please be a nice person? will you? Mar 12 06 11:25 pm Link I know, I know. Let's exclude any photographer who hasn't been published (this means credited work) in a magazine with a monthly circulation of over a million (commercial photographers) or a few art books (art photographers). And we'll exclude any models that haven't been photographed by one or more of those photographers. How's that sound for a reasonable standard? -Don Some thoughts on standards: Any standard would have to be objective. It would have to be a measurement. What can be measured? Money, exposure, circulation, features, media presence? How would such measurements be verified? Would tear sheets have to be mailed to the administrators? Tax returns? Would the name have to be on the top of some Google search? (All of the above is sarcastic. Exclusion based on anything subjective is stupid and undoable. Exclusion based on anything objective would reduce this to a gathering of six or eight people on Friday nights.) In other words, "Let's exclude anyone whos' work isn't up to my standards." Ok your cleared it up better, but there is so much good talent on here and like I said it out weighs the bad, but as Dana said this has a "my space" feel and I guess it comes with the territory....But I know that you have seen some stuff on here and said WTF? Mar 12 06 11:35 pm Link Pat Thielen wrote: tonight I am just crackers....LOL Mar 12 06 11:35 pm Link Funny how this conversation comes up, usually about a year after a site starts. The usual answer in the end is to take it from a free site (where anyone can put their stuff up and nobody pays) to a pay site. That process generally takes the site management a year or two of agonizing but it ultimately chases away the riff raff when it happens. If you're not willing to pay to host your portfolio (either paying for your own site or a site service like this) ... guess who you are ... Of course, models normally get a different deal. Mar 12 06 11:35 pm Link First the disclaimer: I'm not a pro photographer and quite probably never will be. Many are here to improve, learn, dream, network, etc. Go back [if you can stomach it] and look at your first attempts at any of the areas covered here: MUA, stylist, photographer, model. Every pro that is here was worse when they started. If you haven't improved, you're dead [or at least out of work]. If you want only pros, stick to the land based agencies and work only with other pros. Many amateurs are here to improve to the point that they can work with professionals. I can name at least a half dozen in each of the catagories I would LOVE to work with. As a matter of fact, I'd be a fly on the wall just to WATCH some of the great people here work. BUT, I would never know of most of these people if I wan't a "junior" member here. Remember too, this site is a bastard child of MySpace and OMP. So you will not get a truely "professionals only" site with that lineage. Mar 12 06 11:36 pm Link BridgitC-Makeup Artist wrote: THIS IS NOT A SITE FOR PROFESSIONALS.
