I am new to MM and I see a fair amount of Goth. Goth does not have a calling in mainstream modeling, but why is it popular on the net??? What
models enjoy about it and what do photogs enjoy about it???

Answers would really be appreciated.

Because the net and mainstream are about 1 million, 987 thousand miles apart. They have absolutely nothing in common.

In the begining of the net it was the anti-mainstream, gothic art say little to no outlet in mainstream so when the net came goth found a home there.

I have a lot of gothic stuff because gothic models are fun and easy to work with. They have amazing wardrobes and can all do their own makeup. And generally they love the attention photography brings, thus they rarely demand payment for art shoots. They also come up with great artistic ideas on shoots.

You asked, I answered.

i agree with martin on this one. Goth/alt models are alot mor versital when it comes to differnent looks and shoots. You can range anywhere from a girl with a black bob to one with a full body tattoo and blue mohawk. And i gotta agree with the makeup thing most alt girls and guys are accustomed to doing extravegently beutiful makeup everyday.I think were seeing more alt models for that reason versitility not to say commercial models arent either. Im speaking mostly in terms of different body shaps, heights, and faces. Commercial models typiclly adhere to a set standard.

Plus if you want some fierce outgoing models alt is the way to go.

I, personally, enjoy how open people are that are in that specific genre. We're willing to experiment. We're usually the models doing the more macabre, dark artistic shoots. I find it beautiful. It's also a lot more elegant than mainstream seems to be. I prefer elegance myself.

Goth has a market, you just don't know the market. Just like Pin-up, fetish, bondage, and pictures of cats has a market. The goth market is actually expanding. Stores like Hot Topic are growing in market share. There are many niche magazines. You have gothic porn with Suicide Girls and God's Girls. At least 25% of the high school kids I encounter are goth or punk.

The internet has allowed marketing to be razor sharp in targeting what a particluar consumer might want to see. As it has grown the smaller markets have grown. I could go on, but I am tired and am going to bed,

Done the "main stream" and got bored to tears. Now setting up shoots with the Alt/Goth crowd. many of them seem much more open to creativity.

I tend to disagree.  Goth is becoming more mainstream everyday.  Movies, TV, and other media are using the Goth image now.  Some examples are:

Danny Phantom (Nickelodeon Cartoon)
Verizon Commercial
NCIS Lab Chick (Pauly Perette)

All these people are not shown in the bad, dark light that we are used to from Goth.  They are bright, funny, mild mannered, and enjoyable to watch.

I love to photograph Goth, and other alternative models.  There is a market out there, and it is growing daily.

Because there are "goth" guys and girls who want to model and aren't able to do main stream stuff because of their look. I have been "punk" or whatever for a long time, and I prefer alternative themes. Not everybody likes the normal main stream look. And like someone already said, there are a lot of alternative models in the mainstream.

First of all. Goth and mainstream go together just as well as cookies and ass. Moving on...

I'm sure Lip-Service, Skin Two and Hot Topic to name a few would strongly disagree with you on your statement that goth has no place in modeling.

Futhermore as far as artisically I think photographers choose a goth model to suit a project that another model simply wont.

Much of it goes to mindset rather than being defined as 'net popularity and presentation, whether that be goth or other very select areas.

Many of those on the 'net remain rigid in their presentation based on who they are and don't stray far from that in where they want to go in modeling.

A great model actually gives no outward defined appearance of who they are.  They can take on many roles, from goth to mainstream with equal ease.

The biggest difference in the above is one learns "how" to model and the other is only concerned with "what" to model.  The effect of the latter is where the opportunity will be when trends fall out of fashion.

Like its been said several times in this thread, there IS a market for the gothic look.  The mainstream is just that.......the mainstream.  Not every photographer or every model likes doing the stereotypical-yawn of a bikini style shoot.  I mean how often can you make someone crouching in sand look original?

I myself refuse to do anything that doesnt have a darker underlying hint of something.  Personally i find it beautiful and i think that my looks are gothic and im not really willing to change that.  Call me unflexible but im not and never will be the Maxim type.

I'm drawn to it only because its not just an artistic expression for art.  Goth is also a subculture and a way of life and happens to be how I live too.  It just goes to show that we're taking over the world one thing at a time.  First the internet then the world. *insert evil laugh here*

The divide is that of mainstream and lifestyle modeling.

The former commands being a chameleon and diverse naked canvas upon which ideas can be built. It demands a non-devotion to any specific look because your job is to be moldable to a client's wishes.

The latter, on the other hand, seeks out those who are devoted nearly singularly to that look because it's 'real' (aka not some model dressed up to look goth, but a model who just is). The same reason you'd want a person who actually is [insert ethnicity] playing the part of a [same ethnicity] character in a movie.

its even mainstream in some commercials
Ever see the Heiniken Dark commercials? hehe they are great

As someone said before..different scenes for different folks. Your scene is what you make of it. You can be successful in the alt scene (and all genres that includes), and generally it takes just about as much work as it does in the commercial, fashion, mainstream scene..
look at Masuimi Max, Apnea, all of those girls. Most people know them by site.
Plus.. i have found a lot of fashion, commercial, whatever photographers that like to experiment with the "goth" thing too.. just for something different.

Sometimes quite literally.

I am not built for fashion neither am I in a suitable age range, its not my thing even if I were either.
Just as for many alt/goth isnt their thing.

There is a market for everything out there and always someone willing to fill it for whatever reason.

well its not caus goth models want to do mainstream, its becaus we are trying to bring somthing new to the table, i love wakeing up every day and getting ready even if its just to go to the store, gothic modeling is getting bigger and bigger, its just as hard to be a gothic model then a main stream one.. true there is more of a dark side to gothic modeling, but have you ever seen a mainstream model get down and dirty with fetish, bondage, gothic, and so on well not many if any and some one has to do it... i love my look and what i do, any one that feels that gothic girls really are not models need to move over caus in a few years we will be moving in on main stream, and then we will be on top.....

First of all, there is a "goth asthetic" in some mainstream fashion. For example, this is from the 2006 couture collection of Christian Dior:
https://www.style.com/slideshows/fashionshows/S2006CTR/CDIOR/RUNWAY/00300m.jpg

But, granted, the market for goth models is not as large as mainstream models. So why do goth models get interested in modeling?

Well, there are two types of goth models:

1 - Models who do it for fun and love the beauty and asthetics of the look and enjoy modeling as a hobby and a creative outlet. I love these models.

2 - Models who do it for ego and to be "legends in their own mind" and boost their self-esteem. These models annoy me. They think that making a few hundred bucks for Hot Topic or getting their picture in Gothic Beauty means that they have accomplished something. Little do these girls realize that outside of their little bubble of gothclubs and "the scene" no one has ever heard of Marquis or Skin Two, so nobody cares. It's just a way to show off to their friends and feel special.

Now, of course, some little vampire-looking chicks are gonna be all offended by "statement #2" because they'll think I have no idea what I'm talking about. But, hell, I've been published in Gothic Beauty myself. Also in Dark Realms and Outburn. I'm happy about it and grateful for the opportunities. I'm just not delusional enough to think it's a big accomplishment.

it was a pretty crappy show, but mostly due to the horrible sound.  all bass.  some bitch actually screamed at me for lighting up a cigarette.  at a sisters show, i found that funny.

As a photographer, I find Gothic models fantastic to work with.  They are works of living art.  They are also exceptionally creative, have great wardrobes (it's not only just black btw) and the ability to apply their own make-up.

You get it tomorrow.  I get it on Tuesday.  And its only sorta nostalgia to me.  At least I know whats classic, even if I wasn't around when they were first out.  That, and the b/f is getting Queen tix.  HAHA!! WOOT!

"Goth" models are typically less diva-ish.  And hell-a creative.  Sorry, showing my age.

see mainstream has this way of sucking everything in its path. For example. Punk was not popular until someone said 'if we basterdize this stuff, get some boybands in here, cut our hair all emo, wear chuck tailers, and say we're hardcore, there could be a HUGE market for the lost youth (with their parents to back their consuming financially).'

And now its pretty much mainstream.

And since all alternative style ceases to be alternative when exposed continually, i think over time 'alternative' or 'goth' will be more accepted as mainstream. by then you may have looked around and see the underlying model oppurtunities alternative chicks and guys have been taking advantage of all along.

Mainstream models have the "I am perfect-treat me like a God"

Goth models are willing to put it all on the line..."this is me, like it or not!"

Both are fun to shoot, both look good printed, both are enjoyable to work with.

Thats my 2 cents, but I am giving you 10 cents free.

Location Artist and hence forth a Fantastic Gothic Photographer. It is a creative aspect and what you and the model can project and create. I shoot raw and edgy photos so Goth models are easier for me to work with.
Maybe a peek at some of my photos will help (note: not a self promotional plug), if you need an explanation just ask.
