So if you are like me and totally clueless . . .would it help to get an agent or sign with an agency, to get in touch with said commercial clients??

Absolutely. Although many network directly with photographers who shoot commercial work, the photographers don't always do the casting or hiring. Often an ad agency will contact agencies where they will be shooting and cast the talent. (or sometimes it's the marketing mgr of the client if they don't have an ad agency) DEFINITELY network and keep on good terms with the commercial shooters though - they can often recommend models when a client hires them, and certainly enjoy choosing them when possible. But the agency is usually the primary contact because they have a larger "pool" of models from which to choose.

I must be really slow because I'm still not getting it... sad
When I think of agencies, I think I'm going to get scammed somehow...I'm not really sure why.

Invest in a good book about modeling/modeling photography written by people who either are in or were in the business.

That is a good start.

sorry my bad,  my jokes are meant for many that know the system a bit or have been around.

I forget about the new people at times.

Check http://www.newmodels.com/

This will tell you much from  a truthful point of view.  The person who made this is a respected person in the industry.   Realize that this link is not trying to sell you anything,
Just like me.

What I meant by what I do not need to say it 'Pay me now'.

Enough with everyone working for free or with many bad agencies not where the work is making you pay to make money.  (Ps not a rule for some commercial models should pay to get ports and agencies do charge you eventually for testing,  sending books,  etc.)

If an agency is  a place where the work is not is promissing you big success then they are just wishing themselves.

There is just not that much work out there in the middle of  the country in small market towns to be promising people many jobs.

Are there some jobs?  Yes,  do not misunderstand what I have to say.   But enough to make it logical to procede?

Read the link,  all of it and educate yourselves.

I am tired and more in the mood for jokes then serious help.

Good luck to those who are serious.

But a watch your wallet and take 10 minutes to think before making any major decision.

At least 10.

Note, you CAN do this...but don't do it for FREE.

Otherwise, you are right back to square one with my original posting...

Are you encouraging the sense of "entitlement", that people should be paid without making any effort to learn skill and craft?  Most working models have spent money, time, training to get where they are, not just claiming that "I have a look", when those who hold the money said no.

Well, you are 5'3", if an agency tells you that you can be a fashion model, you are really getting scammed.

What a pretty face, though.

And what Jack said.

So, am I saying a "new" model can come out and "demand" $$$ right up front?

Yes.

Whether he/she actually gets the rate asked is another matter...and this is where "looks"/experience/training/credentials come into play...

It's all about supply and demand.

Uhoh.  The "locals" aren't gonna like that statement.  No matter how right it is.

another way to get Paid jobs is to answer casting calls, craigs list, and such.
My first job was paid I think I found an ad looked at the photographers work and studio and went to a test shoot for a workshop and went from there.
I still do TFP to learn and improve my craft and to network but models can't just wait around and hope for the paid jobs they have to find them.

it is about supply and demand.   There are thousands of pretty girls that will model free just so they can show their family and friends their real modeling pictures smile there is an abundance of these "models"  on the net and you can always find ones to work free if you promise their shot will be published or just make them beleive they will get good portfolio photos.

The agencies have grabbed up all the models that they know they can sell to clients and that leaves everyone else out to fight over the very few paid jobs there might be left (the  low budget jobs that won't go through agents)

To really make money in this business (outside the porn industry)  you need to have an agency, not a scam agency, not a photographer manager but a well respected agency.

I just depends on who the agent is. Models and photographers both need agents. Agents can help you get through the mess that many companies try to cloud your eyes with.

But some agents you have to watch. make sure you know what you are obligating yourself to. But it is also important for both the photographer, models and mua to have as much knowledge as possible. You don't want to be kept in the dark about anything.

I just wanted to quickly add that a REAL agency doesnt make money, unless their models do. If you sign with a good one, they will never charge you anything. THEY keep a percentage of what YOU make and thats how they make their living.

A real good thread, something that was honest.  People have to know what they are getting into.  I still don't know the half of it.  But I understand my own approach.  I feel like the craft has to be more than on par before looking for paid gigs.  We have seen some real shit photos on here demanding certain fees and or refusing TFP, it is kind of funny.  But it is the way folks want to do it.  Models need to get their book going, so by all means get it done and if you can get paid, good luck.
