General question for everyone. Why are male models so hard to find? On this site for example, even if I expand my search to age 16-99 & male, I come up with a grand total of 4 in my home city.  Of the few male models I've worked with most have come from over 100 miles away!

I realize that the fashion idustry, etc. is mostly geared toward women, but that alone cannot account for such a huge discrepancy. (I apologize if this has been asked before, I couldn't find a thread about it).

Probably they're in high enough demand in your area that they don't have to go to the Internet for work. Tried calling local agencies?

I have met a lot of male models, or aspiring models, who do not know these sites exist because they do not actively market themselves. Some seem to think the work will come to them even if no one knows they exist.

Females are better at marketing themselves and are more likely to look for ways to do so, such as websites like these.

My issue once I DO FIND the male model I want to shoot I usually get" what`re you Gay?I don`t pose for men!"

Which usually translates in to" I am only modeling to get to the chicks"

Dude... look at the bright side... with 4 local male models... you've got 4 phone calls that won't cost you a dime... and with the way MM is expanding... I'm sure that figure will go up... wink

That's why you have a female assistant make the call.

Male models are more common in large markets.  I think it would be difficult, if not impossible, to get any substantial work as a male model in small markets.  The demand for male models is probably less than 10% of what it is for female models.  If I lived in a smaller market than Seattle, I probably would not waste my time trying to market myself.  I have no problem shooting with anyone or doing just about any type of project (except porn), just to have a hope of maybe working every once in a while.  Beyond the fact that 80% of commercial and fashion shoots cast women, the majority of photographers (who are male) enjoy shooting women over men for their speculative projects.

It's an issue of smaller supply for a smaller demand.

My opinion?

Because all the time women are told "Wow, you're so gorgeous!!  You should be a model!!" by tons of people who are really just trying to say, "Gawd, you're so hot!  Can we bone?"  People simply think that the former statement is more sophisticated than the latter.

Until some years ago, such a statement was just flattering but with the internet and free websites, people can open a profile and try their hand at modeling.  They want to know if they have a shot.  Some do, others don't.

Now, do people tell men, "Wow, you so hot!  You should model!"  Probably.  I just think that rather than contemplate actually modeling (it's my understanding that land-based agency numbers are more even), the guy is going to contemplate how he can score with the woman who said it to him.  Call it a fundamental difference between the sexes.

This is, however, just my theory.  I've certainly been wrong before...

I take offence to that... tongue Then again I've had people, both genders, say I think like both a man and a women so perhaps I don't apply to either gender mentally speaking...

Well,

It can also often translate to, "I'm extremely homophobic and the thought of being naked infront of another male makes my skin crawl..." Some men are actually this homophobic... I myself thought I would be nervous getting naked infront of my photographer because the last male I was nude infront of was my doctor when I was five years of age... I was quite pleased to find that I wasn't nervous in the least through the entire shoot.

I agree with this completely...

This is the reason I started modeling... I got so many of these comments on Myspace that I decided to give it a shot...and here I am.

Because the majority of photographers on the forums are either amateurs or aspiring professionals who want to photographer women.  You know that!

Most guys don't aspire the way women do to modeling and the net lacks the charisma for guys that it has for young women.  It is difficult enough for young women to get bookings.  Many complain that they can't get work unless they take their clothes off (although like every other aspect of the modeling business, we do have some models on the forums that have succeeded in the mainstream).

Since women have such a hard time, it is axiomatic that guys will have a harder time.  Only a small percentage of the photographers here even have an interest in shooting men.  Most of the photo events and workshops exclude male models as well.

So to answer your question, I don't thin there are a lot of guys on the Internet sites because there is not a lot of work for them to be found.

That is not exclusive to male models.  The same is true for women models as well.

Most people forget that, by and large, modeling is a female dominated profession, but acting is a male dominated profession.

When you get into acting, the positions reverse.  Particularly in terms of age.  Actresses who don't establish themselves by the time they are thirty have an almost impossible time to break in.  Actors work often until their retirement.  Look at Clint Eastwood.  He is a powerhouse today.  Billy Bob Thorton started late in his career.

When was the last time you saw Ally McGraw in a movie?

So for you male models that find modeling to be slanted against you, take heart in knowing that acting is just the opposite.

Because it is inversely proportional to the amount of males who do the responses in the forums.

I just started in late august. I have no comp cards and one agent. I just got my photos a couple months ago. I get work on my agents website. I know I neewd to market myself more, thats why im here.

I know several guys who model. but most of the guys I try to get to model talk themselves out of it. They say things like only gay men model, or I dont think I have the look, or im not shooting with a guy.

I was scared to model because I only see my flaws. But i tried to get into film acting and my noneexclusive agent told me she wanted to use me as a  model as well. So I agreed, flattered, but whats true is there isnt a big response to male modeling more so in my area. Virginia Beach, Virginia.

So far ive been used in one print, two bridal shows, two manniquinne modeling things, tons of promotional modeling, and several film pieces.

If enough people told me I might have a fighting chance in NYC or Cali, Id be sending my info out right away. So thats an open invite to tell me either way. if its not good news, send it privately ahha, ill feel like a fool.

but i still want to know.

When I was shooting paid tests for agencies in NY several years back, literally about 50% of my work was of men. The smaller the market, the smaller proportion of men I was asked to shoot.
