Now, in band photography, we have a rule about not shooting in front of brick walls, or the dreaded "railroad tracks" shots that have become so cliche in that field.

What are the overdone fashion cliches that should be avoided?

Is it actually a "rule" or just considered a "faux pas"?

When I think fashion I think clothing that should be avoided. Not locations.

Clothing that should be avoided at all times:
high waisted jeans or pants.

I don't care how good your figure is. These are trashy. They were in 1989 and they still are today.

not that it qualifies as fashion, but:

BELTS ARE NOT BRAS.

Furthermore,
YOUR BOOBS SHOULD NOT HANG OUT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR BIKINI TOP.
AVOID CONSPICUOUS LABELS...DO NOT SHOOT IN SOME FAKE BURBERRY CRAP.
USE 80'S REFERENCES SPARINGLY.

Damn I wanted to say

BELTS ARE NOT BRAS

Crap I missed it!

and the boob out the bottom of the shirt is pretty much 70's poster porn.

It maybe just me but I'm getting a bit tired of the distorted shots from a slightly to very wide angle lens fashion photos. But really it is probably just me.

Okay, maybe not a rule, but it could get you on rockandrollconfidential.com

They have the best collection of the worst band promo shots ever. With snarky commentary.

I suspect that was borne out of too many photographers using their living rooms for studios.

Like me. 13'X14' just doesn't cut it.

These jeans regardless of how hot you are, how incredible your figure is, etc. give the illusion of a long wide ass and practically unavoidable cameltoe. Sorry.

holy shi...

Look at the example you provided.
The model has zero hips, no shape and why does the torso appear to be 3 yards long?  Again I'm sorry. I see nothing flattering or cute about these jeans.
p.s The lower half of her body looks deformed.
More power to you though if you have the guts to wear those in public. smile

Sweet Jesus.

I had a couple of examples in my head... then I saw those.  And between starting to cry, and trying to figure out if they were photoshopped, I forgot them.

I don't know how can a fashion shot be a cliche, I don't see any.

Fashion assumes something almost newly edgy, fresh.  So if there is a cliche that must be a glamour shot or something else...

How about close up shots flower petals or feathers on models' eyes and matching eye shadow.

I'm doing a shoot in the near future of a blonde woman with super huge implants taking a bubble bath on the railroad tracks. Thinking about converting it to black and white and just leaving her lips in color.

That wouldn't be too much of a cliche, would it?

I still don't think there is such a thing as a fashion cliche, fashion has to be "trendy", so it's like the opposite.  Once it is a cliche it stops being fashion.

There's not much originality left in the world. Even fashion has cliches.

I think there is a lot of originality, I think that there are bunch of things that haven't been done yet, and that is to come.
And I don't think that glasses or railroads are fashion photographs.  As far as feathers, it depends on how you use them, it doesn't have to be a cliche if you use it in creative way, the same as flowers... It is just a meterial, the idea is to make it look interesting and invest some creativity into it.

Now there are some cliche poses, but the clothes is really what takes you attention and makes each photo even with the same pose look different.

There is no cliche's but there are some "trendy" looks (I THINK)

On a serious note:

Yep, most things have been done to some extent and in some manner already. However, I keep running across incredible images that are thematically cliched but they are done so well they rise above the mediocre and played out.

Maybe the quality of the work is a key criteria in what is a cliche and what is not.

It's something to think about.

Glasses and railroads can be used in fashion images. However, if you read the thread you may have seen that I corrected several people for naming things that definitely aren't used in fashion. smile

We were talking about flowers and feathers around eyes... which is getting pretty cliche now.
