Beyond Discouraged

Have you ever hit that point when you just feel like giving it all up?
Can’t stand to look at one more image?
Hate everything your shooting?

Yeah. I've hit the point. Shoot some more. Focus a little harder. Look again. You'll get it!

I disagree with the "just keep shooting" idea.  Change something.  Either shoot a subject you have not tried before, or take a break all together.

Honestly, I am not able to relate.  I can't stand not shooting.  It just doesn't feel normal.  I'd never shoot anything I "hate!"   A change of scenery does an eye good though!

Best wishes!

No. Never.

Would you rather work in the insurance industry? Retail? Management? A bad day shooting is better than the worst day doing what you hate.

I speak from experience. I did insurance for 3+ years, after working as a newspaper photojournalist. Be thankful for the bad shoots and for the good ones. You love photography, right?

Take a month off of headshots and weddings.  Go shoot some editorial stuff.  Your great at that and it has to be more fun for you.

I'm there.  Everything I shoot is shit.  Hate it.  Not even slightly motivated to shoot.  Bored.

of course....but then you remember why you're doing it and that a 9-5 aint for you....so you get out there and come up with something great! Shoot something new that you've been wanting to try or brush up on something you've been wanting to learn!

I felt like you do for quite a while. I just put the camera away, it did not interest me. I've decided to start working on images I've already shot in Photoshop, Painter and Illustrator. I want to be re-invented and only I can do this. I read your post, went shopping and came back. At the grocery store I saw at least two radiant young ladies who had been so blessed by nature that I actually felt the desire to make images with them (Bellingham is a college town). I did not say anything, had no cards with me nor the spirit to engage. But it gives me hope that the embers of passion may spring forth into a blaze of creativity as time goes on. In the meantime, I have been playing my guitar, that fire burns bright.

You gotta get paid before you can get laid.

About 3/4 of the way through every shoot. Then I get crazy and take the best pictures.

I get burned out on Photoshop easily though. If I try to edit more than 1000 shots a day and try to start retouching the ones I haven't culled from the herd, then I can't even sit in front of the computer for e-mail the next day. I try not to go through more than 800 pictures and retouch more than 5 in a day, or retouch more than 30 on days when I'm not editing. Otherwise the burnout kicks in and I just can't face Photoshop for three or four days. Sometimes a week or more if it's bad.

I get that way. What I do is I take a break. I relax. I withdraw from the world of photography and modeling and do something else.

Usually, give a week or so, I get inspired again.

Been there... everyone reaches plateaus that you need to rise above

I checked out your portfolio and site... go out and shoot some landscapes... sometimes changing perspective helps

habanero sauce.. I have MAD DOG - worlds second hottest hot sauce.. I once touched my face after holding the bottle (big mistake)

But that'll be a great way to spice things up tongue

But not to get off topic.. try adding content to your images.. a story perhaps? have a model get into character. maybe hire a mua or stylist? Use your imagination. You'll never get bored.

I'm lost on what offer you're talking about for TFP?

That's going to happen to everyone no matter what field you are in.  And in a creative field it just shows up a little more, but its something that can be moved past.

Just think off how many successful photographers and creative people there are and think, "they didn't do it by luck, so I have a chance too."

I just came back from a few weeks in vegas.  It can help....   wink

This happens to everyone who grows in their art, everyone.  It's natural, and it sucks and it's painful.  It's like when a baby is teething, it hurts and they cry a lot but at the end of the process they have something they didn't have before.

A key element to artistic growth is introspection.  Combined with an eye (or ear depending on the medium) which which gets more critical as you experience grows, this leads us to see the flaws in our work, or simply the mediocrity in it.  Those who do not go through this are stunted in their growth, for there is no reason for them to soldier onward towards the next plateau.  Others have given good exercises.  Ultimately you will find what works for you, but the method is relativity unimportant.  What is important is that you are constantly searching both the world around you and the world within you.  Remember it's not about the destination, but about the journey.

Best of luck,

Matt
