Horizontal vs. Vertical
I think it is unfair that horizontal pictures don't get as much space while in small format as vertical ones do. I have some photos that are horizontal and I LOVE them, but don't put them up because you can hardly see them, unless you click on them. Plus! In the book - you either have to put it up for two pages, where you are running the risk of having a page-break in your eye or something like that. Or make it very small again with black borders. Do you guys have the same problem? Jan 10 07 05:22 pm Link Yes, except for some reason, in my book I prefer printing them small with white borders... Jan 10 07 05:56 pm Link Brian Diaz wrote: Really? Why, don't you think the bigger versions look better? Jan 10 07 06:06 pm Link Julia wrote: Some of my best pictures are horizontal. But I hate having my portfolio look all messy from large vertical thumbnails next to small horizontal thumbnails. So that's why my MM port only contains vertical images. I'm anal like that. Jan 10 07 06:14 pm Link Here is to the horizontal's they don't get enough love. Jan 10 07 06:15 pm Link That's not a bad idea to put the on bio page.... Jan 10 07 06:16 pm Link It was wierd, I used to shoot in horizontal only, out of ignorance. Then one day I up and starting shooting 97% vertical, just kind of started doing it. (edit: I was in Iraq and I met a fellow photog, and he pushed me into cosidering vertical for most shots, because I own the D70, and it does not have a vertical grip attachment option) I just think vertical fits better in a lot of situations....but horizontal is effective with so many shots. Jan 10 07 10:09 pm Link You could fake everyone out for a print portfolio. There's nothing that says a portfolio has to be vertical (even with an agency, but talk to them first). Use a horizontal portfolio and print the vertical pictures small to fit the short height. Then the horizontal pictures would be large and the vertical ones small! Acutally, I'm against the grain. Since I feel they are both important, I make people turn the book 90 degree and group them a bit together so they only have to turn two or three times. I think I have one photo that works well small so that horizontal one is printed small on a vertical page. No one's complained and when I've asked, the ADs don't mind - they understand. But my book is only 11X14. Larger books would be an issue. On MM it works fine, just make the horizontal photo vertical size a little more than the vertical pictures hieght and visually they will look the same. The thumbnails aren't equal, but the full size views are OK. Jan 10 07 10:39 pm Link I have a book with 12" x 12" pages - black paper - lets me put landscape or portrait images in and have them proportional on the page and you never have to turn the book! (BTW - I use 8x12 images) Works for me! S Jan 11 07 12:21 am Link My horizontals get as much love as my verticles... I think the black border helps Insert Shameless portfolio plug here: https://modelmayhem.com/pic.php?pid=1624352 https://modelmayhem.com/pic.php?pid=1541972 https://modelmayhem.com/pic.php?pid=936895 Jan 11 07 12:27 am Link |
