I may be too (on my multi-tasking days ;-) but I just visited the umpteenth profile FULL of camera phone and poloroid pics, that had about 15 comments each..while lots of models and photogs with kick ass portfolio pics go threadbare.

Is the "MySpaceiliznation" of MM finally complete???

People aren't going to stumble across profiles because there is no voting system or why of highlighting the talent here except to be active in the forums and have a really stunning avatar that catches people's imagination.

If MM wanted to really highlight talent, they would develop a quarterly contest for best MUA/Male model/Female Model/Photog or something along those lines. All they would need to do is offer like a $100 prize or something. In fact, I'll put $100 in the pot if the minds behind MM come up with any sort of contest that promotes some of the hidden talent here at MM.

Do you pay attention to the comments?  I don't give too much weight as people might just be trying to be too nice or too mean.  It's more important for me when people pay to have my picture printed!

You're welcome....its funny, I see so many people complaining about camera phone photos here and yet I almost never see any....

I mean, I've seen people going ape over photos that I myself don't understand the appeal of but this place certainly hasn't gone MySpace crazy with lousy self-taken cameraphone shots....

Maybe its just me though....

well, time to go over and compliment the hell out of Lestari's phone shot....

Looking around, I have come to understand that some of the better Photogs, Artists, and Models use MM for an online port and nothing more. They don't need to draw our attention, or mingle on the forums to find friends. They know exactly who they want to have their URL, and that's all that matters. They don't crave recognition from other MMers so they certainly don't need to spend a lot of time here. (IMO anyway)

Ummm, I can't remember the name, but PDN reported that Sony hired some big-time guy to do an around-the-world shoot with one of their camera phones for their ads.  PDN had a couple of the pics.  Shows to go you: it's just a tool.

Making yourself seen (I.E. posting in forums, going in shoutbox ect.) that is a good way to get comments if that is what you are looking for. Staying in the closet doesn't get you noticed and it is also a lot harder to find work that way.

I do agree with that there are some shots with a camera phones that are way better than some shots in studios and on location.

Every time I go out with friends to a club they all hand me their point and shoot cameras because they know I'll nail the shots and make everything look cool and interesting. It's a bit of a challenge to pull off cool shots with a fully automatic tinker toy when you're plastered, but it's fun. The camera doesn't make the shot.

I guess I just don't understand:  what are you complaining about?  Does it bother you that some profiles have camera phone images?  Do you think that an image should receive a number of comments proportional to the cost of the equipment that made the image?  Are you just jealous because you aren't getting a sufficient number of comments?

Speaking personally, when I went to school,
... the beginning photography students learned on SLRs,
... the intermediate students worked with view cameras, and
... the advanced students were given a $5 plastic Diana camera.
The idea being that photography students can get themselves so wrapped up into the technology that they forget the aesthetics, and by the time they consider themselves to be "advanced", they need to loosen up a bit.

Sure, I can appreciate the darkroom mastery of an Ansel Adams print, but Adams isn't my favorite photographer -- Diane Arbus is, and she never had a great amount of technical skill.  Still, her subject matter was so powerful that I didn't mind her technical deficiences.

Um, I thought it was fairly self explanatory what I was complaining about, and why. Noone said anything about the cost of equipment. I don't care if an image was made by a $2500 camera or a $2 throw away. It would be nice to see more appreciation for art and less for "mall photo booth" style pics...but then some may lack imagination for the finer things. Oh, well.

That being said, on to your next statement. No, I'm not at all jealous about a "sufficient number of comments", what is sufficient anyway? 1 or 100? 10 or 10,000. I'm not a comment whore, and the little time I do spend here is for professional purposes and not to gab endlessly. I felt like dropping a line and I did.

I figured someone would come along and suggest "jealousy" *snort*, because I was ballsy enough to point this phenomenon out. As far as comments go, with your subject matter, no need to wonder why you have so many! ;-) I doubt it has a whole lot to do with lighting, the cost of equipment, or the type of camrea you use either! ;-)

Well, I agree with some of the other posters that say a lot of profiles here aren't seen as much because of those people rarely being here or not being novices and here for professional purposes only. That was a reasonable explanation I hadn't really thought about previously.

I agree cpmpletely.

It's not just about the equipment, or the technical aspects.

Networking has a lot to do with it as well.
