Welcome to THE MAYHEM!!

You can search for advertised jobs and trade/TF opportunities (casting calls for MUAs) and post an Availability Notice to make others aware of your availability for work/trade/TF here:-

Please also educate yourself about scams by reading this useful thread:-

If you're looking to start a career in makeup, a good option would be joining a retail counter even if it's just part time and for a short period of time. It'll help you network, get your name out there and build a solid kit (first you will learn which products work better for you and different clients, second you will benefit from employee discounts and freebies which are always useful)

While you do this, you have to start looking for photographers to shoot with and get good quality images until you have a few good images in your portfolio to show around and then the paid work will start coming in. Bridal, proms, 18th parties and such are the best way to make money at first. Editorial, fashion and print may take a while and depend largely on your contacts, networking skills and (why not say it) luck.

Read all you can, study everything you can and test, test, test.

Welcome to the Mayhem hienvy

Three good ways to network are:

Post an availability notice letting people know that you are available (under the casting/travel tab). This is for when you want to charge money. You can offer trade as well.

Search for Casting Calls in your area based on criteria you select. Post a Casting Call letting people know about an idea you have and want to put into a work of art. This is for when you are willing to pay other people. You can offer trade as well.

Search or Post Casting Calls and Travel/Availability Notices
Official Casting Call Rules - Read

Browse for photographers in your area and leave comments on images you like, send a friend request or message. Start a list of photographer's photos that you think are top notch for photographers in your area. This can become something of a Rolodex. Make sure that you select the Advanced Options and select an appropriate Logged in within:. I typically use 30 days, but you may want people who respond faster. Otherwise you will get photographers who haven't logged in in over a year. There are a lot of inactive accounts.

Good luck in your search!

Hello fellow members, many thanks for all your help and advice. This is great stuff I can use to get started. Currently I have my make up brushes and some other bits for my kit but I haven't bought any make up yet. With a tight budget, what essential items should I invest in as part of my starter kit (again - just to remind you I don't have a big budget to spend). Be great to get a few ideas. Thanks.

Go here and read all you can: http://inmykit.com/original.htm
There are lots of videos on YouTube as well where you can hear makeup artists talking about what they have in their kits.

Also, I'd suggest changing your username. People will remember you by your username, and you want to portray yourself in a professional manner.

Hi San and welcome to MM.

West London us certainly the place to be. But you will be competing with established Muas for regular work.

I would suggest applying for tf castings to get yourself some images where the results of the make up can be seen in real photoshoots. Eventually maybe actual magazine tears. Once you have such, you can approach hair salons for example involved in shoot work, and also consider bridal shoots as the market for make up there is huge from actual brides, and also consider theatrical make up etc but you need those tears etc to get you an in and, regular paid, work.

Good luck!
