Jovanna was born in Houston, TX but grew up in Lake Jackson/Freeport, TX. She got her first guitar at the age of 7 years old because she admired Prince, Lita Ford, Joan Jett, The Pretenders..etc. She grew up with an exceptionally wide range of music, her grandfather owner a record store which he sold only black music such as Blue/Zydeco/R&B, but he would get records from distributors from pop arti
sts that just sat in the corner because he didn't sell it. Jovanna would always rummage through her grandfathers boxes and ask if she could have it based on the album cover or she might have remember the artist from MTV (Her parents allowed her to watch MTV) but also her mother would order albums out of Columbia House. Jovanna recalls that her and her mother used to listen to records at home. Jovanna says "I think my mom was pretty cool, I mean I remember we had Talking Heads "Remain In Light" Tears For Fears "Songs From The Big Chair" on vinyl which had a profound affect on me later in life." When she turned 13, she decided that she wanted to be a rock star, and everything else really didnt matter, she knew it was her destiny to create music. Jovanna has been playing with bands for many years, but her most professional band she was in was "Among the Weeds" They out in LA then relocated to Portland, Ore in 2008 and then left the band in 2010 and relocated herself back to Houston, TX. Jovanna almost gave up on music entirely until her former band members told her to not waste her talent and to continue to play music. In later 2010, Jovanna started working on her own music where she could really express herself without limitations. She began to constantly write music on her computer without a guitar which was something very new for her to do, then she finally got a guitar and even more songs started to come out. Originally she was gonna release her first debut album titled "Autonomy" sometime in the summer/fall of 2012, but then she decided she wasnt ready to release the album first because she says. " To me, Autonomy is a bit too advance for me right now, Its like I wrote this album too early in my solo career, I needed to start with something more simple". Her current project she is working on is a 6 song EP called "Sixth Class Citizen" which is an interesting mix of extremely hard/industrial/noisy/angry songs (The first 3 are that way) and the other 3 are more melodic/etherial/shoegazey with funky beats. "I wanted to create this EP because I'm frustrated with the way things are and the people who are running the show" Jovanna plans to shoot a video as soon as she's done lyrically with her first song from that EP. "It will be low-budget, black and white, grainy..reminiscent of Ministry's Stigmata, I think it's a good introduction to the world who I am and yes I do exist. Jovanna also says don't get too comfortable with this music, because sometimes her genre's change. "Sixth Class Citizen and Autonomy are so different from each other. One is really angry and political, the other is happier, optimistic, hopeful and reflective." Jovanna will also be relocation back to California in the summer of 2012, so she plans to do as much as she can musicially while she's here, so please stay tuned!
