Photoshop has a very long and steep learning curve.

I started working with Photoshop in October 2011. Even now, what I don’t know about Photoshop is much greater than what I do know.

This isn’t my best effort, but it was my first. It took me seven weeks to finish this image. I started over about once a week.

The eyes are overdone, the skin isn’t smooth, and the image is way oversharpened. There are a few other photos in my portfolio from the last three months of 2011. You can probably tell which ones they are. I feel that I could do most of them better now than I could when I first retouched them.

After I finished it, I found that I was doing things in the wrong order. I had no concept of workflow.

Lately, I’ve been going back and redoing some of the older photos and working on others that never got retouched. My immediate goal is to get good at frequency separation.

Are you seeking out new techniques and new information, or are you just doing the same things over and over? Imo, working to improve in one area at a time is most likely to be the path to improvement.

It takes time and effort to learn the proper techniques. I've learned most of my retouching through tutorials from here:

If your serious about retouching beauty and fashion, this is a great tutorial:
