Do I need to friend a model before being able to send them a message on MM for shoots? I'm so very confused :<

Basically, for you and many others the answer is yes.
Paid accounts and older accounts are grandfathered in so they usually can send at least a few private messages to 'non-friends'

It use to be that people could reserve friend slots for people they have worked with or many other criteria.  Now if there is is even the slightest possibility of working with someone, you should make or accept a friend request.

For myself, however misguided I may be, I chose to pay even though I am one of the "old guys". :-)
