Hello,
I'm very new here and I recently got an email about a job offer for a magazine shoot. I'm a MUA with some experience, mostly locally. The email was sent to my website which is then sent to my personally email. They said they came across my Mayhem profile which led them to my website. If it matters the magazine is Redbook.
I'm just very curious to know how I would know if this is a scam or if this is truly legit.

PLEASE HELP!

Thank you,

People that are new to this website are frequently targeted by scammers.  Redbook is a major magazine so I really doubt they would be looking at profiles on Model Mayhem to find makeup artists.  More than likely it's a scam.

If you check, I think Redbook has its office in Manhattan.  I'm sure there are plenty of makeup artists in Manhattan and there's no reason for them to pursue a makeup artist in Texas.

Did the message say they would send you a check and you were to cash the check and keep part of the money and then forward the rest to someone else.  If they did, it's definitely a scam.

how would you know?
simple! you would click where it says:
"learn about scams" on this website.
theres links all over.

heres one:
https://www.modelmayhem.com/forums/post/575330

also in your case, its a scam!
don't reply to their email.
A huge magazine like Redbook headquartered in New York is not using Model Mayhem to seek out a MUA from Texas who is still developing her portfolio.

Did the email you get come from [email protected] and is easily verified as an actual employee at redbook?
or did the email come from:
somegenericname@yahoo / gmail / etc saying they work with someone who works with someone who knows someone who works at redbook.

its bullshit.

If it sounds too good to be true.....
get what I'm sayin?

It is mostly like a scam.  In particular a version of the "Nigerian" scam.

"The scammer will generally always want to send you a check – before meeting you or even signing a contract! You are informed that you get to keep a large portion of the check. Payday!!! However, you are also told that once you cash the check you have to send someone else (a makeup artist, a hair stylist, a wardrobe stylist, a studio) a “small portion” as their fee."

I suggest that you take the time to read the information provided at this link:

ya gmail all bad.
usually how it goes is they will offer you a check and ask you to forward some of the funds for whatever reason.
then a couple days later the check bounces, and the bank takes your money out of your account to cover the bad check and youre screwed cause you already sent away the funds.

its called a nigerian scam as someone mentioned above.

You have been on Model Mayhem for a total of 12 days now.  By your own admission you have "some experience, mostly locally."  Yet, Redbook magazine wants to offer you a job over what I am guessing are thousands upon thousands of other MUAs who probably have considerably more experience and possible much better skills than you do?  Does that sound logical and / or probable to you?

So I did some research and I found the lady's social media who I've been communicating with. (Her insta, LINKDIN, her FB, & her articles on Redbook...So is it possible that a scammer is posing as her? I'm just a very honest person & I don't understand why these ppl would go through great measures to try to scam you! sad

Through email alone, they can claim to be anyone they want. Don't trust unsolicited random emails. Don't reply! To check this person out, you would need to contact them directly through Redbook's site, (not some random Gmail provided by the scammer) and ask the real person about it. (Odds are it is news to them) Through Mayhem, you can check members with other people they have worked with.

Mayhem profiles are visible to every scammer in the world, so limit what you post there. If you link to your website in your profile, and you display your email there, expect many more scams!

The most common scam is the Nigerian Scam

Hey! I got the same mail as you, this was definitely a scam smile Though at first as wasn't sure it was it and exchanged a couple of letters with them. Suspicious e-mail and promises didn't stop me smile

They send me a check that of course I didn't get.  And it was funny that later, they referred me to  some "makeup supplier" so that I can get a special makeup kit from there, haha) $700 for everything. They told me  that it will be all covered and I don't need to worry. After this I became very alert, because it seemed like it was one person (supplier and HR).

And when they tried to hurry me up into some kind of late fee payment (supplies doesn't last long:)))) ) I tried to scam them back smile After that, predictably, they stopped.

I wish I had known about this type of scam earlier and saved my time.

Hi,

We are hiring makeup artists for the July edition of Redbook magazine. I came across your profile on Modelmayhem while scouting for talents that will suit the case. I'd be glad working with you and if you are looking to expand your portfolio, working with Redbook is just right. You will be meeting new photographers, directors, studio manager and producers from California and New York. You will also be working with models from Louisiana.

Do reply if you are interested and I will give you further details.

Kind Regards,

Allison Berry

Dear Tonio,

Your email was received and it shows you are willing to be a part of the shoot. This edition of Redbook magazine will be shot in New Orleans on the 21st of July 2016 and the crew is expected to be available from 9am till the end of the shoot which should be by 4pm. Hotel accommodation will be provided for all. As for travel, a round trip e-ticket would be issued and sent to you via email at due time if you do not live within Louisiana.

The shoots will be used for the magazine pages and the pictures will also be exhibited on our website. Therefore, you are required to be flexible, reliable, self-motivated, enthusiastic, with a professional appearance and a passion for delivering exceptional service. You must have excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills. You should also have up-to-date knowledge of available make-up kits and beauty products.

Key Responsibilities:You will be responsible for applying make-up aesthetically for models; Apply make-up to the models using a color palette and different tools such as mascara, sponges, eyebrow shapers, lip liners, brushes, and applicators.
Match skin color to color palettes to determine best looks.
Ensure make-up looks natural and well-applied under different lighting.
Apply touch-ups as necessary and remove makeup from clothes if some is transferred.
Wipe off make-up and reapply as needed.
Ensure appropriate action is taken to minimize unpleasant side effects from the use of specialist make-up techniques.
Maintain a clean work area and ensure all work instruments are sanitized in accordance with Redbook standards.
Ensure continuity in make-up and liaise with other members of the design team to ensure the overall look/effect is consistent and coherent.
Budget and order materials and equipment from our specialist vendors.

You stand a chance of making a reasonable amount from this deal, and even a noticeable fame. I believe that it will be a positive experience for you especially if you are looking to expand your portfolio.

Kindly let me know if you are fully willing to accept this job offer and can meet the above responsibilities listed.

Best regards,
Allison Berry

I always love that.  I'm reminded of "Maxwell Smart, the most famous secret agent in the world."
