Scam, this is the setup email.

Consider the entire thing from an objective, reality-based perspective.

You are nowhere near the center of commercial clothing marketing.

You are a new, unproven model.

Your stats are not what is typical for this type of work, they want 5'9" or a bit taller.

If you express interest (you should CAM, see link below), they will propose to send you a check for the entire amount and you will be asked to send along payment to the other party involved. After you do this, the original check will bounce, leaving you holding the bag. Do not respond, CAM!!!

The language is typical of scams and this is a real tip-off:
"The shoots will be held at a rented studio in your location,"
Why would they scout locations near to you and transport all of their equipment and crew to you?

I'm not sure what they are saying here:
"The total pay for the jobs is $2780 and you get $550 as your percentage."
Typically they send you a check for too much money and instruct you to forward a portion to a third party.  Their check bounces and your bank deletes the full amount from your account including what you forwarded to the third party.

You know, we now have Verified Credits to protect models from naughty photographers, but it seems from the regularity of these 'Is This A Scam' posts that maybe all the time and effort that went into coding the Verified Credits thing could have better been directed at making people more aware of the real nasties that are out there.

Same old Nigerian Scam
Also read NEW MODELS; Learn about scams

Don't display your email in your Mayhem profile, as it is visible to every scammer & pervert in the world.
Instead use MM's private messages with members, & then be very selective about who you give it to.
Avoid people too-urgently wanting it right at the start. They don't need it that soon. Their need to rush
you for it is usually a sign of a fake member/scammer, who knows they will be booted off quickly.

Yes, it's a scam.  In the beginning of the message you got it says something about camouflage materials and then later on it says the theme of the shoot is zodiac signs.  Realistically, no one with a budget of a few thousand dollars is going to use a model that has "some experience" and only five images in their portfolio and they definitely would not come to your location to shoot.  As mentioned, they would give you a check for a large amount and tell you to keep a portion for yourself and forward the balance to someone else.  A few days later you would find out their check bounced and you are out all the money you forwarded.  As the old saying goes - if it seems to good to be true it isn't.

So scammy it's not even funny....the typical infodump, unrealistically high pay rate, unrealistic accommodation re location, and the "Kindly" language and broken English.

I received this same thing. However they found me on my instagram, not even on here. Yes it's a scam. I did not go to the bank and cash the check however has anyone gone to the police? Need to know how far people have gone to stop this (from the posts, it seems to keep happening).

Nobody who actually HAS $2870 would be so stupid as to send it to a total stranger from the 'net in hopes they would send any part of it on to somebody else. Which is the next thing they'd ask you to do. Classic Nigerian scam. The amazing thing is it still seems to work from time to time, otherwise they'd quit doing it.

Definitely a scam, as the good folks here have explained.  Welcome to Model Mayhem, good on you for following your instinct when it cued you in that something seemed off!  My general rule is that if someone contacts me and something feels weird, to NEVER ignore it.  Though there are many good people out there, there are some bad apples who will reach out to you, and it's very important to keep your wits about you!

Wow, got the same thing and was feeling suspicious, so I copied and pasted their email into Google search and came across your post. I had a feeling, but I'm so glad you posted this! Now I know for sure! Blocked his email. My "person" was Steve Rawlings. They contacted me on Instagram.

Hello,
We went through your portfolio and have decided to consider you to be a model  for the upcoming special fashion shoot of Yves Castaldi's 2017 spring collection launch in the US; no nudity, fetish, bondage, escort and other adult content stuff. The shoot would be held at a rented photographers studio close to your location, the shoot would be 2 hours daily, we would be responsible for your transport and feeding throughout the photo shoot. You have the opportunity to come with a family or friend, we would handle his/her expenses along with yours, just for you to feel comfortable throughout the shoot.
JOB DETAILS:
The shoot is scheduled for February 18th and 19th 2017. Outfits  would be provided by Yves and put together by a US based wardrobe stylist on the day of the shoot and the shoot is just for 2 days and you would be paid $1200 for the whole project, the Job is Urgent so you are to get back to us as soon as possible so that we can arrange on how to get you the part payment, meet the stylists and other crew members. You would be paid the initial payment of $500 to guarantee your participation in the shoot, as part of our working policy and ethics of our company, we give part payment to any client before we proceed with any job and balance immediately after the work. As I told you earlier this project is very urgent, we would be taking care of your payment, accommodation and other  expenses. The part payment would be mailed directly to you along side with the wardrobe stylist allowance, funds for hair and make up for the shoot. Exact Location and time would be made known to you soon, this is to ensure that we pick a convenient time and place for the shoot.
NOTE: As soon as you get the payment, you would deduct $500 and wire the remaining balance to the wardrobe stylist. The wardrobe stylist will contact you as soon as she receives all your information from us, if you are interested kindly get back to us with your details as follows:

Projects.

After reading all the others here, that are exactly the same, why would you even ask? Of course it is!
Decades old Nigerian Scam

Next clue: "Hello Blank"  They can't even be bothered to use a name for you! Scammers are lazy! They usually just copy & paste the scam email from someone else's previous one (complete with bad grammar) and just change a detail or 2.
Never reply (that confirms to them that your email is real and active) & never give them more of your info. If they found you by email, expect many more!

Note: The advice I give to new models is not to use your personal email for modeling. Instead, create a 2nd email to use just for modeling, that does not have your name in it. Don't give out your personal one. That way if you run into problems with your modeling one, (scammers, perverts, hackers) you can replace it without affecting your personal contacts. Don't post you personal one anywhere online.

I knew it was too good to be true!  I received the exact same email with the zodiac theme and the same figures. My guy's name was Steven Rawlings. I searched his name and this came up thankfully. I'm gave out my name and he emailed me more info..seemed too suspicious.

Here's some of the email:
"As said in my previous email, your initial payment would be made alongside your wardrobe allowance (shoes and clothes). The payment will be sent out to you and am awaiting the confirmation of this from my client. Once you receive the payment, you are expected to deposit them into your bank account, after which, you deduct $250 being your initial payment to guarantee your participation in the shoot, and then send the remaining balance to the wardrobe/costume stylist so that she can take care of your attires and fashion outfits along with other planning.

Also you will not be coming along with anything but your identification as outfits/costumes for the shoot will be brought to the studio of the photoshoot by the stylist. Get back to me with a confirmation that everything is clear and fine with you. As soon as i receive a confirmation from you, i would let you know when to receive the payment. I look forward to your email. Once again, congratulations."

I have to send the remaining balance to the wardrobe/costume stylist? Wouldn't I pay them outright? Or it would be included? And I have to deposit the money first?? Sounds super sketchy to me

And why doesn't the police get involved? Where can we go?

Just called some people out on a scam (The old "We'll send you $500 and you send $700 to a stylist etc etc) Acted real professional as far as scammers go and then when they realized I wasn't game the last message they sent me was. "We'll be sending some non-friendlies out to you soon. Best"

Anyone else ever get "threatened" by scammers?

empty threats only make them feel better. tell them to "eat your shorts and choke to death". it's stupid. just like the current rash of fake kidnapping scams or fake irs back tax phone scams - now that the south american lottery winner scams are dying.
