Robie K. is a Nordic creative photographer from Finland. He works in monochrome only and does a very narrow field of abstract and artistic nude photography. He photographs women, couples and men using Pentax 6x7cm medium format equipment. Downtown Helsinki is also another passionate subject, the city of his origin. The photography is not a commercial endeavour; it is part of his creative interest.



The project started in 1997 is continuous. One objective is to publish a retrospective book after some decades of photography. The work has been recurringly displayed publicly in the cities of Helsinki, Joensuu and Tampere and also abroad (Austria and USA). Some of the photographs are in private and public collections and also as music disc cover art and tour posters.

The pictures do not contain any message. The meaning of the picture is created, or simply dismissed by the viewer.
Technically the photography is simple and ascetic; always monochrome, low and surrounding light and no flash. Some call this; "surrounding darkness". His intention is to capture the natural picture and moment in full frame, without the need of further cropping. He also tries to achieve a sense of depth; a third dimension, in the two dimensional photograph using shadows and very slight depth of focus. A fourth dimension in the photo, hidden from the viewer, is that the photographer knows the story of making the picture.

Photographic equipment trials include the Leica M6 camera and Leica f2.0 / 50mm Summicron lens. There was also a brief test in large format (4x5"). This has been a way to assert that the 6x7cm format still is the best for the photographer. B&W low light digital exploration was done with Canon EOS 1DsMkII equipment. This resulted in a hardcover project book; "A study in digital monochrome" (2008). The workhorse Pentax 67II and TMAX400 bw-film still remains the basic creative tool using the f2.4 / 105mm and f2.8 / 165mm lenses.

Robie K. on vuodesta 1997 lähtien toiminut luovana valokuvaajana hyvin kapealla saralla; hän kuvaa ainoastaan musta-valko materiaalille, ihmisiä alasti ja joskus Helsingin keskustaa. Varsinainen kuvauslaitteisto on Pentax 67II (6x7cm negaruutu) keskikoon kamera ja TMAX400 filmi. Projektinomaisesti hän on vuonna 2008 tutkinut digikuvauksen soveltuvuutta omaan kuvaustyylisuuntaan 1DsMkII laitteistolla. Kokeilusta syntyi kovakantinen (omakustanne) kuvakirja;
"A study in digital monochrome" (2008) ja päätös siitä että perinteinen mv-filmi on kuitenkin kuvaajan ominta materiaalia.



Tunnusomaista teoksille on tummat sävyt, varjot ja ilmeikäs rajaus. Teoksilla ei ole kaupallista tarkoitusperää vaan ovat osana kuvaajan omaa luovaa työtä. Kuvissa ei ole erityistä sanomaa. Kuvan merkityksen luo tai sen sivuuttaa katsoja. Valokuvausmenetelmät ovat yksinkertaiset ja pelkistetyt, aina musta-valkoista, vähäisessä valaistuksessa, ympäröivässä valossa ja ilman salamaa. Tarkoituksena on vangita kuva luonnollisena koko negatiiviruudulle, ilman jälkirajaamisen tarvetta ja saada kaksiulotteiseen kuvapintaan syvyysvaikutelma - kolmiulotteisuus- varjoilla ja vähäisellä syväterävyydellä. Kuvan neljäs ulottuvuus syntyy siitä että kuvaaja itse tietää ja tuntee teokseen liittyvän tarinan jota katsoja ei voi kuvasta lukea.

Teoksia on ollut esillä näyttelyissä vuodesta 1997 (Suomi, Itävalta ja USA). Teoksia on myös yhteisöjen ja yksityisten kokoelmissa sekä musiikkilevyjen kansikuvana.

Seuraava tämän luovan kuvausprojektin isompi tavoite on julkaista perinteinen kuvakirja johon valikoituu satakunta, kuvaajan omasta mielestä hyvää teosta yli parin vuosikymmenen valokuvista.
