About me

Photographer Kris Dewitte (°1967, Belgium) has built himself a solid reputation within the international film scene. For years he’s been spotted taking impressive photographs.

Dewitte’s work could already be admired at expositions in Ghent (Fnac - 1999), New York (Classics Gallery 1999), Brussels (De Bottelarij/KVS – 2001), Amsterdam (de Brakke Grond – 2001, de Melkweg Gallery - 2008), Ostend (Fort Napoleon – 2001, The Japanse Garden at the Royal Villa - 2011).

Since he has been officially selected for the 50th anniversary exhibition at the Cannes Film festival with a photo of Steve Buscemi holding his handcamera on the rooftop of the Carlton Hotel, he have had over 20 solo exhibitions all over and published 9 books under his name, mainly with cinema as a subject, including JONG/YOUNG, LEAF., OUT OF THE SHADOW, ORIGINS, CYCLO SAVIO, LUX, CARPOSERS, OPEN ASIA and FACTS OF EMOTIONS.

He shot the photography for the album FOLLOWING SEA by dEUS in Greece, Spain and Portugal and also appeared in the clip of the album Quatre Mains http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsFfHdqNOWI
He was also been asked to shoot the cover of most recent album by great composer Angelo Badalamenti.

He also worked as a photographer for the fashion designer Dries Van Noten.

At the 2002 Photo Festival Knokke-Heist he was a guest of honour photographer, together with the Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf.
2004 was the year of the LUX exhibition at the Ghent Caermersklooster, a centre of art and culture. In 2005 Dewitte was selected at Breda Photo in the Netherlands.

In 2006 OUT OF THE SHADOW opened at the Apollo festival, Victoria West, South Africa. The same year he won the prize as best cinema photographer for a photograph of a Mongolian actress from the film Khadak, the exhibition was shown at Casa dei Cinema, Parc Borghese, Rome, Italy.
Kris Dewitte has always been fascinated by cinema and photography, this combination makes a perfect marriage.

For years he has been doing portraits of people in film.
He has worked on over a 100 film productions as a stills photographer including A Perdre la Raison/Our Children by Joachim Lafosse and 38 Témoins by Lucas Belvaux.

He also publishes in editorials such as Elle Magazine, Sight&Sound, Premiere magazine and Focus.
He portrayed film icons as Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Martin Scorsese, Akira Kurosawa as composers like Maurice Jarre, Ennio Morricone, directors of photography, producers, actors, editors and many more.

He prefers to work unprejudiced and open. What remains is the photo. He always wants to catch the moment. This moment makes the image even stronger.

STILL – project, which opened in at the Melkweg Gallery in Amsterdam, the Netherlands March, 2008, and was after shown in Belgium, Poland and Japan is a work in progress which includes photographs of Morgan Freeman, Adrian Brody, Maggie Cheung, Peter Jackson, Michael Moore, Michael Fassbender, Vincent Cassel, Jim Sheridan, Charlotte Rampling, Eriq Ebouaney, Monica Belluci, David Cronenberg, Bartabas, Amira Casar, James Woods, Ryan Gosling, Oksana Akinshina, Anna Mouglalis, Tilda Swinton, Juliette Lewis, Viggo Mortensen, Adélaide Leroux, Cloe Sevigny, Alex Descas, Abolfazl Jalili, David Lynch, Kim Ki – duk, Lubna Azabal and Philippe Noiret.

KISSING PROJECT was shown in Osaka, Japan November 2009, he continues working on this series for upcoming shows.
All icons, artists and interesting faces kissing on black/white film, including Dita Von Teese, Betony Vernon, Laura Harring, Aimee Mullins, Bernie Dexter, Joe Dallesandro, Michael Franti, Mamie Van Doren, Joey Arias, Monique Sluyter, Amanda Lepore, Esse Lawson, Jeanette Mathisen, Joachim Trier and many more.
MOOOV Film Festival selected the photo of the Indian producer and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap kissing Kalki Koechlin as poster image 2013.

In 2009 was the first big retrospective at the SUNTORY MUSEUM in Japan.

OPEN ASIA was showing at Kunst Forum Würth, the biggest solo exhibition sofar.
Opened on March 14, 2012 and ran until December 23, 2012.
Over 12.000 ticket paying visitors came to see the exhibition. Photographs shot in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Thailand, the inbetweens on filmsets of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Tsai Ming-liang and more.
"If the art of cinema is able to build myths and legends, the photography by Kris Dewitte draws its strength from this, while breaking the artifices to recreate the intimate relationship between actors and spectators" - Tsai Ming-liang.

In 2012 the book SHOOTING TIME was presented at EYE, the new film museum, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He photographed directors of photography such as Roger Deakins, Ed Lachman, Vittorio Storaro, Benoit Debie, Harris Savides, Christopher Doyle, Robby Müller, Darius Kondji and more.
The book was edited by the Netherlands Society of Cinematographers including interviews with these and other cinematographers.

AMAZING MEN opened on January 6 at Gallery Kermisstraat60 and ran until the end of March 2013
