Clarence White is a hero. One of the most influential photographers of the early 20th century, he's not very well-known, but the students he trained are a who's who of photographic greats. Among them were Margaret Bourke-White, Anne Brigman, Dorothea Lange, Paul Outerbridge, Karl Struss, and Doris Ulmann.

I live not too far from where Clarence White did some of his best,  early work. Careful styling, precise control of elements and effective use of light help a photograph transcend the ordinary.
