About Me

I am from California and have spent the last several years living in the Washington, D.C. area, where I developed my passion for photography.  Residing here in the Mid-Atlantic region has afforded the opportunity to choose from a nearly unlimited number of inspirational settings.  Ideal for its rich coastal textures, minimalist landscapes, and otherworldly sand dunes, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and the surrounding area is my favorite nearby location to visit and shoot. And I will never run out of photography subjects in Washington, D.C. and nearby Philadelphia, both American treasure cities.

I have an unrelated full-time career and use photography to fill something that was profoundly absent in my life: creativity and the act of producing art for the sake of art.  I prefer to have a minimalistic life and aesthetic; my photography reflects that.  The less complicated my life, the better I can be at the few things I try to do well. I love monochrome. Nothing appeals to my eye and soul like well-crafted monochrome/black and white minimalist, surreal, and ethereal captures.

I enjoy all aspects of photography's creative and technical process: envisioning, planning, shooting, lighting, and editing. To me the process of photography involves the most unusual mixture of creativity, deliberative planning, randomness, some luck, and the laws of physics (light), all brought to a boil in as fast as 1/500th of a second, or faster. Sometimes, I’ll be plagued with potential images in my head for weeks until I can execute on them. I admit it’s a bit of a compulsion, but one that brings me joy.

An FAA-licensed drone pilot with a commercial rating, I am never satisfied with shooting in one genre, and I continue to develop my portfolio with landscape, aerial, portrait, and travel photography. Time lapse photography, like long exposure, can convey chronology and motion in fascinating ways. I also love theater and am fascinated by the acting process;  Working with models to tell stories has afforded me an opportunity to be a director of sorts, which has been fun and immensely rewarding. I also welcome the chance to meet interesting people with creative backgrounds.  I don't just "take pictures of pretty girls."

Even the most extraordinary images now have a two-second shelf life online; given the sheer volume of digital images produced in the world each day, nothing seems original (because nothing really is anymore). I do think social media has sort of numbed us just by its sheer volume of exceptional images offered daily. It’s too much of a good thing, in my view. I spent years off of social media until it felt like I can longer explain why I wasn’t on Instagram. Ultimately, though, the process of photography never fails to deliver me calm, peace, and clarity in an ever-chaotic world, like yoga or meditation. And if an image gives ones viewer some kind of emotional reaction, it is worth it. That’s the point. I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating it for myself.
