About Me

Introduction:

Film Art East Photography is a new, film-only (35-mm SLR / medium-format TLR), photography service, located in a quiet town on the east coast of England, with a 3-hour travel time by car or train, +/- 125-miles NE of central London.

The nearest international airport (Norwich - aka NWI/EGSH) is approximately 30-minutes away by car, taxi/train. Only vintage film cameras and vintage equipment are used - including old-school, hand-held, light-meters and tripod(s).

Why use film in the digital age?

The entire process is different, pure and refreshingly honest. Film cameras do not process the light, and they don't 'think', convert, or manipulate, like digital cameras do. It's a purist situation where mathematics and the laws of physics blend with chemistry and creativity.

As a consequence of using old-school 35mm or medium-format cameras, precision analogue light-metering instruments, and calibrating film-exposure using the traditional grey-card method, the overall experience is somewhat different than what you'd expect from a 'modern' photo-shoot...as are the output images.

The experience:

There are no super-bright flash-heads repeatedly discharging in to your eyes. Instead, new, near-silent, continuous & adjustable (both in intensity and warmth) LED lighting is used, where needed, and if available light is insufficient, or unsuitable, to do the job in-hand. There's the added bonus that pets, and children, are not so disturbed, fascinated or irritated by the LED lighting, too. Continuous lighting also offers the distinct advantage of WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) photography.

For the model, or sitter, the shot count is much less than a typical digital shoot, as the pace is slower. Emphasis is on the the model, or sitter, being relaxed, comfortable and given the opportunity to slow-down, think, ponder, and express themselves through the composition and ambience of the photographs.

There's no need to allocate hours and hours, post-shoot, to edit, correct and retouch hundreds of images. There's no need to expend an entire evening reviewing and 'choosing'. In short, it's a much more simple, logical and arguably a much more sensible way to do things.

Location & facilities:

Subject to season, time, day and weather, the cliff-tops, beach and several local green-spaces are all available, nearby. If you like, you can walk the 1-mile long promenade (and/or expansive beach which parallels it), and clear your head with brisk sea air. Quiet, grassy, fields and peaceful woods are a 5-minute drive, or a 10-minute cycle-ride away. A selection of nearby cafes and bars are also within easy reach. (The local deep-fried Fish & Chips are fresh and second to none, if you feel like indulging).

With sufficient notice, availability, and if requested or needed as part of your photo-shoot's goals, one of the local hotels, which is literally just 5-metres from the beach, can be used as a photo-shoot location or perhaps double as overnight accommodation, if needed. (The same hotel was the backdrop for the famous balcony/open-air music scene in Danny Boyle's 2019 film "Yesterday").

Irrespective of actual photo-shoot location(s), toilets/shower, kitchen and private changing rooms are always available, and a mug of tea or coffee, and biscuits, are usually not far away, either.

Cameras:

Both of the film cameras currently in use are 1980s-vintage film SLR/TLR: Namely a Japanese Olympus OM-10 and a Soviet Union Lubitel 166b TLR. (For those born since 1989, USSR was, more or less, the old name for the current Russian Federation, before its name and political changes).

The vintage light meters were manufactured by Weston (Weston Master models III and V). It is claimed that Ansel Adams used the Weston MkIII light meter, so they're obviously worthwhile, reliable, precision, instruments - which work according to the photographer's needs and the environment at hand.

Summary:

If you want a change, like to do things differently, need to escape the big city for a coastal photo-shoot, for a day out, or simply prefer the ambience which film-camera images almost always deliver, please get in-touch.

Your e-mails and messages are transcribed to paper and/or printed-out, stored, and digital copies immediately deleted when received or sent.
