About Me

I am a freelance photographer and creative artist with 25+ years of experience making fine art black-and-white images with vintage cameras and classic lenses. Most of the photography I do for art explores the tensions between scripted and spontaneous, acceptable and taboo, conceptual and pragmatic. In other words, I have a minimalist’s mindset regarding equipment, staging, and props.

I only shoot on film. Why film? Simply put, I prefer the incomparable aesthetics of paper prints over digital files. But shooting on film is also a slower process that requires an experienced photographer’s preparations and a model’s patience. Subject, form, composition, and emotional content guide my frame and focus rather than color saturation, lens sharpness, or camera pixel counts. And, yes, of course it’s much more challenging to use film but the payoff in terms of composition and image quality makes it worth the cost, time, and effort to do the job right!

I generally work with slim to medium-build men between 18 and 40 years old but I have also worked with men over 40 as well as straight couples and same-sex couples. My aim is to challenge the conformity of contemporary photography that has diminished the traditional artistic aspects of the male nude to some sort of voyeur’s peep show that stigmatizes the male form and denies natural human affection between men regardless of sexuality, age, and race. The full-length nude portrait of Bruce de Sainte Croix taken in Peter Hujar's studio in 1976 is an example of authentic self-exposure. That picture was made by Peter for Bruce. How it might appeal to or offend others was irrelevant to their endeavors. The body landscapes, Miksang portraits, and photo essays I make are composed with the same thought in mind: to invite curiosity about the subject of the photograph without trying at answering questions about them.

I choose to do my fine art and conceptual photography work on an unpaid (i.e. TFP / 'time for print') basis in my studio in Port Townsend, Washington or on-location when I travel. This work is my art to celebrate personal freedom of expression by creating sensual images that make timeless statements about the human condition and personal authenticity. For once money isn’t driving the agenda which allows space for more creativity. In addition to working with models from this site I have also photographed actors, performance artists, dancers, athletes, figure drawing models, free range nudists (Freikörperkultur), online exhibitionists, and tattooed extroverts. I enjoy collaborating with people who are comfortable in their skin whether they call themselves a model or not.

Following the shoot I will give you an unlimited license to use images from our session for your professional portfolio and/or personal archives. In addition to providing a link to all the digitally scanned film negatives, I also will make three to five archival prints of your choice to be delivered via Priority Mail to you. Most importantly, I will also consider your images for a coffee table book that I have been working on since 2018 that is scheduled to go to print in late April 2024.

"Ken is my husband and partner of 20 years. I've worked with him more than any other model. As biased as my opinion may seem given our connection, I assure you that he is one of the most thoughtful photographers that you will ever have the opportunity to work with. You will be treated with respect and appreciation for you time. And in the process you might end up with some gorgeous classic black and white silver gelatin film shots. There's nothing else like them when they work out well. Give him a chance, you won't regret it." Read less
