I've been a hobby photographer since I was a kid and now - many years later - find myself in a position as part-time carer for an elderly relative where I have time on my hands in small-town Scotland. (Specifically, Banff. The drag-down list of towns on MM didn’t include Banff so I just picked Fraserburgh as it’s relatively close.)
I thought I might try to expand my photo repertoire away from things-I-see to people, to work out whether I could do portraiture.
This won't be commercial though - if it ends up anywhere it's likely to be Flickr or Instagram. I worked with commercial photographers in Central Belt Scotland in the general editing/publishing business in the 1990s and 2000s and know how hard it is for them to make any kind of living these days.
Creativity has a value in itself though, even if you can't depend on it to pay the mortgage.
I have no fixed agenda over the kind of pics I might want to take but I also know that getting friends/family to behave like professional models is a tough gig. It's better to have people who want to be models :-)
