I am a self-taught artist, drawing inspiration primarily from the work of traditional oil painters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. My greatest influences are the artists Rembrandt and Vermeer. I see in their work and in the work of their contemporaries a sensibility about technique that I share. Technique, to me, isn’t just essential, it is everything. My ultimate goal is to create the most realistic depiction of a three-dimensional image on a flat surface that I can. In my work there’s little distinction, if any, made between the craftsmanship and the artistic intentions. Every brushstroke is set in place carefully to create the best illusion possible.

In terms of the emotional content of my images, two things are important to me. First, I strive to create a sense of mystery. I want my paintings to provoke curiosity and create questions in the mind of the viewer. Second, I find myself drawn to quiet moments versus the high-drama moments seen in the work of the Old Masters. In our noisy and distracting world, a quiet moment can be a welcome escape. In capturing those moments on canvas, I hope to make images that feel personal and intimate.
