About Me

As a photographer and an artist it is my goal at a transitional period in my life to focus on my photography and create professional quality images. I have pursued my photographic interests for more than 50 years. With an established interest in sharing my knowledge and skills I will seek opportunities to teach Photography as well. My passion is fine art photography --be it portraits, fashion, landscape, or architecture. I am presently interested in exploring and expanding my repertoire and my portfolio in portraits and fashion. With an eye for quality I will continue to capture and create realistic, unique, and memorable essences of those with whom I work --for myself and for them. A lifelong interest, exposure, and immersion in cultural geography and studies in awareness, art, and photography have influenced my personal choices. My technical skills culminate from training and education in medical imaging, art, photography, and digital imaging. I have just retired from a career in Medical Imaging and moved permanently to Farmington at the end of September. I have accepted the challenge to continue to refine both my aesthetic and technical skills with each and every new image that I make.

My photographs are an extension of my life’s experiences and the world in which I live. I have chosen to call Northern Arizona and Northern New Mexico home. I presently have a house in Farmington, New Mexico. The current emphasis in my work will involve imaging close to home and to include travels throughout the immediate Southwest. To remain an active performer in a dynamically changing world of art I will render digital images and seek to achieve the highest proficiencies in the use of digital imaging and post processing software. I will not release any raw images. I believe that post processing is an integral part in finishing every image. However, I am a traditionalist. I enjoy the traditional methods of analog and black and white photography as well. I am still fascinated by the magic. To the extent that efforts to maintain traditional skills render a positive and not a limiting / negative effect on my professional growth I will continue to dabble in traditional methods as well.

My education has been an eclectic accumulation of skills and knowledge. This was not a general haphazard accumulation but an independently directed, ongoing pursuit of knowledge specific to the development of abilities supportive of an established repertoire. I subscribe to the maxim that education is life long. My life’s studies have been predominantly “Imaging”. I have always liked and entertained the saying, “so much to learn, so little time”. I graduated with a BA in Fine Art from CSU-Stanislaus (1976) and a BS in Photography and Printing Technology from Northern Arizona University (1980). I completed Medical Imaging studies at Northern Arizona University and at the Army’s Medical Field Service School in San Antonio, Texas. I completed a Master’s in Career and Technical Education at Northern Arizona University as well. Later I completed a Certificate in Picture Archiving and Communication Systems Management from the Michener Institute out of Toronto and a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching and Learning from CSU-East Bay. Post degree photographic studies have included coursework at San Juan College, CSU-Dominguez Hills, Columbus State Community College (Ohio), and Bellevue College (Washington).

Not as much by choice as by default I am an adventurer and an explorer. My career has involved me in a variety of travels. Through my travels I have explored a vast geography and a breadth of approaches / experiences in photography, art, education and management with a work history spanning 50 years. This included 20 years of teaching Medical Imaging (Oklahoma, New Mexico, California), and Graphic Arts and Photography (Chinle), I will retire from my 6th Imaging Education Program Director position in August 2017 (after completing 10 consecutive years of management and teaching and obtaining two consecutive maximum accreditation awards). When not involved in teaching I involved in practicing my imaging and management skills and pursuing my education. My military experience and a short stint with the VA took me to Hawaii, Viet Nam, Japan, Washington, Texas, Kentucky, and Alabama. As an Imaging Specialist and Imaging Manager I retired as a civil servant / federal employee after 21 years of service. For 18 of these 21 years I worked in rural, Native America. Much of this was spent living and working on the Navajo Reservation off and on for most of 30 years –in the villages of Tuba City, Ganado, Many Farms, Shiprock, Chinle, and Tsaile. Other experiences found me living on the San Carlos and White Mountain Apache reservations, within the Oklahoma Territory, in the Eight Northern Pueblos Region of Northern New Mexico, and in both Southern and North Arctic Alaska.

What have I done with my photography? I also have a passion for Fine Art Landscapes. I’ve done family portraits and individual portraits (to include senior portraits). I’ve done album covers. I’ve done weddings. I’ve done class pictures (to include group shots). I’ve done event documentation. And one year I shot the senior prom at Chinle.
