I fell in love with movie cameras as a kid, shooting shorts in the backyard on my Dad’s 8mm Supermatic. From the first frame fired, I was completely hooked and proceeded to spend the rest of my teen years behind a camera. By nineteen, I'd written and shot my first feature film, a post-apocalyptic drama captured in stunning Super VHS - I mean, this was the nineties, people.
After graduating from WSU in 1998, I found work as a loader on indie films and worked hard to climb the ranks of the camera department. Later, I’d get the chance to work as a staff Director/DP at North by Northwest Productions in Spokane, where I’d hone my craft under the tutelage of some seriously skilled shooters, including the Northwest’s wickedly-talented Danny Heigh. While there, I directed and shot scores of commercials and multiple feature films, developing my voice and style.
Shortly after moving from the Pacific Northwest to Los Angeles, I directed Frank, a feature film starring Britt Robertson, Garrett Morris and Jon Gries. In the same year, I co-founded new media shingle, Big Fantastic with my fellow WSU alum, Chris Hampel. Along with our partners Chris McCaleb and Ryan Wise, we produced some of the first major deals in the space - including ground-breaking web series “Sam Has 7 Friends” and “Prom Queen,” both of which were Emmy-nominated. In 2007, I joined the Writer’s Guild of America and have since written screenplays and teleplays for Warner Bros. Television, Fox 2000 and Colorforce.
And while I enjoy writing and producing and feel lucky to have gained experience in so many facets of the industry, I never stopped loving movie cameras and never stopped shooting. In 2013, I worked as a cinematographer alongside co-dp Andrew Waruszewski on Why We Ride, which was directed by powerhouse Bryan Carroll and won best documentary at the Motorcycle Film Festival. And I continue to shoot and direct for a roster of networks and national brands, including NBC, Nat Geo, MTV, Comedy Central, Ford, Sprint, Smirnoff and Toyota.
In 2015, I launched a new shingle called Macro Space, a turn-key production company based in DTLA that draws on my many years in the industry.
