St Francis once said, “ He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. And, he who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.”  These words resonate through the mind of Stephen Hynes with all of his works.

Stephen Hynes is an American photographer hailing from Birmingham Alabama currently based in Nashville Tennessee. He’s a fun going personality with a beautiful sense of humor and a love for the artistic humanities. Pulling inspiration from his surroundings and people around him, he constantly strives to deliver powerful content.  He is known for creating clean and highly impactful fashion, beauty and lifestyle portraits.

His path in the arts was originally paved by music. He began his creative career as a classically trained trumpeter. This led him to a crossroads of pursuing a collegiate level of music or serving in the military.  He ultimately served in the United States Air Force where his trumpeting was maintained by serving with his base honor guard and the Air Forces auxiliary CAP as a bugler. While serving, he started developing his imagination and mind’s eye for photography. Stephen understands that art is a means of translation—whether it’s setting the mood for a labored screenplay through music, or producing a photograph displaying the labors of a designer. Photography to him is the humanizing power that allows viewer’s emotions and thoughts to cultivate organically through the senses of the artist.   

Photography for him is the affirmation of someone else’s design. Design is the place of daydreams. It’s a place of perfection relative to the individual crafting. It could be a makeup artist’s vision of beauty or a clothing designer’s use of textiles to develop a look. Stephen uses photography as a vessel to carry the moments he has captured in time to others. It’s about displaying workmanship, artisanship, technical knowledge and the objection to compressed quality.
