“When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.”
― Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 I decided to turn my life upside down in 2012 when I founded a custom made clothing, accessory and costume company called The Weird Turn Pro. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kansas City Art Institute in 2006 I packed up my car and set off to New York City to pursue my graduate studies at Pratt Institute continuing my education in Photography. In the summer of 2012 I quit my 9-5, spent all my money on art and sewing supplies and I put myself to work. I challenged myself to make something everyday. Drawings, paintings, sewing projects, printmaking, screen-printing, anything I could get my hands on. That same summer I had the opportunity to make the Disgraceland Hook Squad merchandise for 2012/13 events and shows. Seeing how people responded to the pieces gave me the encouragement to take the plunge into developing my designs and presenting them to the suspension community. I was launching my brand with no start up cash, no investors, or anything that is really necessary to start a new business, especially a fashion retail company. I just knew a few things; I knew that I had it in me to produce beautiful items that would mean something to someone. The wedding dress I sew, the jirkus hoodie I mended, whatever the project is I knew that the art I made would matter to people. All I had to do was make it. At Mecca 2013 The Weird Turn Pro made its debut. I launched my business on a wing and a prayer and always keeping the words of Hunter S. Thompson in mind, “when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.” Now, 2 years into this project, only1 year of being an online retailer all I see in the future is possibility, appreciation, love, and a really badass wardrobe. I have an ongoing relationship with Skindicate Suspensions as their lead costumer developing costume concepts with the group and crafting handmade custom elements. The support I receive from the suspension community to this day is overwhelming and very much appreciated. I don’t think I’ll ever find the words to express my gratitude. I hope I show it through the love and time spent in creating my pieces. When you decide to have me make something for you know it will be custom made, weird and mother fucking awesome. Lifetime guarantee ;) Verified Credits (0)Worked with The Weird Turn Pro? Share your experience and become verified! Add CreditsCredit Notes
